A sad day for many different reasons yesterday, with one of them being my W211 320 CDi Avantgarde sold to a very wise forum member.

Due to a new business venture in the new year I am only looking at spending up to £5k and then sell in maybe 6 months when I can buy something a little nicer ;)
The criteria to be met is;

1. Must be a diesel.
2. Ideally Mercedes, but open to suggestions.
3. I have 3 young children so it needs to be a decent size.
4. Mileage unimportant as long as it's backed up by service history.

So far I have been looking at the ML 270 and the S320 CDi.
I have ruled the C-Class estate out because it is too small and I'm not keen on the 210.

Thanks:thumb:

S320 CDi would be a nice car but if you are conserving money for a business venture stay well away from the ML unless you want a truly wallet emptying experience.

Others that spring to mind are BMW 530d or 730d Audi A6 Avant 2.0 Tdi or 2.7 Tdi. Volvo V70 or S80 D5

The more I think about it, the more I am leaning towards the S320 CDi.
Jay has one in at Mercland for £6.5k but thats just out of my budget.

The thing about buying it from Jay is you would know that it was absolutely spot on. If you bought at the top end of your budget £5k it could easily cost you £1 - £1.5k to put right the niggles and faults, S class are not cheap motors to maintain. If you are thinking of moving it on in 6 months then the history + bought from Mercland will help you retain most of its value. So if you can live with tying up and extra £1.5 k for 6 months it could be a nice option :dk:

I understand about the niggles but a very good friend of mine works for Mercedes as a technician so any work that I did come across would get sorted for cost plus a favour, if you get my drift....;)

S class or a 7 series would be a step up to "luxury" cars. Remember, they're also bigger, wider and longer, than your W211. Service/maintenance costs will be a bit different too.

If you just fancy a change for some time, then I think, as Flanaia said, E39 530d would be perfect.

You can easily pick them up for less than £5k and there's quite big choice of them.

I wouldn't go for Audi or Volvo, as you won't like them after your Merc ;)

OMG, most suitable car for Sweetpea being a BMW!! Say it ain't so!

I think we'll see you in an S-Max before a 5 series! haha :thumb:

I wondered where you had got to, pal! ;) :thumb:
The thing is, I do quite like the X5 3.0d but they cost more than I want to spend.
I've been searching the internet all day and I think my best bet is the S320 CDi.

If you don't mind the size, then still an excellent choice! :)

You probably just sold the right car for you......

I know....
It was a big problem getting 3 children in and out, and what with me not wanting to have too much money tied up in a car, then it was the right time I'm afraid.
In about 6 months time I will be in the market for an ML320 CDi Sport :thumb:or maybe a L322 Range Rover:eek:.
I have seen a couple of S320 CDIs for between £4-5k, which I know aren't going to be minters but hopefully it wont be for long...;)

I also meant to put in my first post that if anyone knows of anyone selling an S320 CDi, then drop me a PM. :thumb:

Did you get what you wanted for the 211, sweetpea? Am looking to sell mine soon and trying to judge the market and how much I will put mine up for!

Would a people carrier suit you? If so, try the Seat Alhambra (re-badged and better than, a VW Sharan)- should get a pretty good one for your budget

I would rather chop my legs off than drive a people carrier! :p
thanks for the idea though:thumb:
