W211 saloon, I’ve had an annoying clunking at the front end for months now that I had put down to some worn bushes but on inspection yes some are worn but nothing has any loose play nor can I see/ hear any metal on metal ???? MOT isn’t until 18th March but, as I’m having other fault issues looked at this week I thought I would post about this clunking for opinions ?? I have noticed that the clunking only seems to be under 20 mph..... maybe not being a qualified mechanic I may have over looked something ?

Forgot to mention that it sounds like only on drivers side/ O/S...... quick research suggests anti roll bar linkage ?? Well have another look tomorrow if get 5 mins.....

Possibly a ball joint or torque arm bush. If you need any parts, I'd recommend this outfit owned by one of our members.

Take it to a garage beforehand where they can inspect the suspension components and use a pry bar to confirm where the clunck noise is coming from.

Take both arb links off and see if noise goes away. Good luck with this . As finding noises on this set up is difficult.

Hi, well I took O/S wheel off and took weight off the hub and had a pry with long screw driver and tbh there seemed a lot of play at the top end of the link and with a torch I could see the bush was cracked/ spilt and fair to say most probable cause of knocking noise.... purchased one for each side anyway at £38 and I can replace them myself....

I’ve replaced ball joints/ rod ends etc as some had play in them

Ok better inspection today and the Bottom end of the o/s anti roll bar linkage, when I tried undo the bolt the whiole thread turns and with out braking the rubber gaitor I don’t think I will be able to remove the linkage however, it’s actually the arm on the thread that has movement due to the nut somehow not being tight enough..... but, as stated I don’t know how I can pry the thread to turn the nut either way...... lol heeeellllp !!! And also the bushes are not actually knackered after all........

It’s solid and considering it’s been loose for a while I would say the threads are probly sheared anyway so I will have to purchase more parts.....

Ok so before I cut/ grind the nut off what size thread spec is it so I can get a new one lol ?

You bought oem drop links didnt you? Aftermarket ones always come with nuts, so its probably going to be either m10x1.25 or m10x1.5 i would imagine more likely the latter, if i had them in my hand i could tell you exactly by looking at them

Yes they are oem links

All the same, I still appreciate all the help and advice from everyone ! Thanks !

Removal/ refittting of anti roll bar ball joint S...... as they sit in the control arm do they pop out fowards or backwards ? Also, Is there a circlip under the rubber seal ? Thanks
