Failing that, can anyone speak German?

Certainly "it could go at any time" was the assumption I was working on for mine.

As above - it's not just the counter that can mark the end, the pump can also fails as pumps do.

Failing that, can anyone speak German?

Lots of German people can speak good English in my experience.

I've done Google Translate and have managed to get an answer.
£750 for an exchange Bosch pump, which is still terrible but better than the £1000 my local garage quoted.

Thank you to Merc85 for kind email btw.

Am I right in thinking that only a main dealer of Indy with a Star machine can change these???
Or can any competent mechanic do them?

If the competent mechanic has Star (and knows how to use it) then there is nothing stopping them.
The system must be disabled and depressurised by star first.
Then the new pump initialised and bled using star.
Otherwise it is a simple spanner job.

Can any garage or mechanic get a Star machine?

Probably only of interest to a garage specializing in Mercedes as it is their own diagnostic system. It isn't cheap by any means either.

I had the same problem, had the pump reset by a specialist tec guy in east london cost £150, that was a year ago been perfect ever since, let me know if u want his number

Thanks.

If the Star readout shows how many pedal pushes your pump has done in its lifetime, then it is possible and reasonably safe to do it. Mine did not show up on Star and my mechanic said that because it didn't, the pump could go at any time even with a reset.

This is commonly used by people who have a car to sell apparently.

The only safe reset is when a Star diagnostics tells you your particular pump can be reset. MB have worked out on certain pumps, you can move the "goal posts" to allow longer service life, OTHERWISE you are only kidding yourself and playing russian roulette with your car and peoples lives.

The guy who did mine was a highly skilled ex mercedes benz tec guy, he checked the counter then the pump before he reset it with mb star and another set of softwear, he wouldnt reset it if it was unsafe

Yes that's the correct way. Thumbs up for doing it correctly. We get asked so many times to do it the unsafe way, and everyone is told the same, to go elsewhere. I wouldn't want to be put away for manslaughter.

Good for you.

So many dodgy people out there putting money before people's safety. Lock the sods up.

Update:

Big Bird lives to start and stop another day.

Thank you to all who have contributed. In the end the whole thing cost around £1000 inc vat, which was still a shock but better that £1500 quoted by my garage.

My Mercedes guy was excellent by the way and I'd recommend him. Picked the car up and delivered it back the same day. Link above somewhere.

Thanks again chaps.

Awesome result "sort of" Now just think you shouldnt ever have to worry about replacing that again, Well in your ownership, I love sbc i think its a great system. Good for you sir.

Thank you again and for the offer of help.

Definitely a bunch of Good Boys on this forum.

For new or used one ??

Guys are these pumps still expensive to replace/repair? I've heard bosch stopped producing new pumps quite a few years ago? So all these "New pumps" at sky high prices are just reconditioned..?
