W211 E220
Hi people,

Just like to say a quick hello to everyone first, although not new to the forum but this is my first post.

Afraid to say my W211 E220 07plate has suffered from the black death disease. I have had injector 1 replaced and few thousand miles ago. She has done nearly 300k now :). After doing a 200 mile journey over the weekend perfectly fine, the next morning she started up to heavy knocking noise and white thick smoke. I made the assumption one or more off the injectors had gone due too the severity of the knocking noise and smoke. If it did not knock so I would have gone down the road of a blown turbo. Injector 1 and 2 seemed like the likely culprits this time. I decided not the cheap route but get all the injectors checked by a diesel injector specialist whom confirmed injector 1 and 2 where gone and advised 3 and 4 should be done also as they weren't too great either. Injector 3 seemed an original Delphi one to me as the bolt was an original long bolt still.

So I have replaced all 4 injectors now with refurnished one, not cheaply. The knocking noise has disappeared now completely and the even seems to sound idling quieter than before but she is still suffering from thick white smoke. I have allowed it to run idle to see if it clears away with no avail.

But to the turbo, maybe ? After taking the car down it seemed like the smoke had reduced by about 40% and remained to smoke under acceleration. Doesn't seem to be a lack off power nor does the smoke really smell like oil smoke more diesel.

I've scan her and she only comes up with code P0670 and P2030. No other faults showing.

Any advice in what direction I should be heading or at least looking towards for now.

Much appreciated guys, thanks in advance

After all the injector problems, could your engine oil be diluted with diesel and the oil level level too high? If the engine is starting to pick up diesel loaded sump oil you are in danger of a runaway. An oil change might be a good idea!

+1 get the oil level checked and changed soon.

It could still be an injector, one could still be faulty?

So white smoke = unburnt fuel. So there are a few things to check like;

1) Is the MAF clean
2) Did you code the injectors or maybe one is still faulty.

As other have said. may be the oil level is too high. That might cause sensor being cocked in oil and miss reading. I would agree and change the oil and filter. The oil is not burning off as no blue/grey smoke?

Thanks guys for the quick responses.

Ok, so I have a few options too consider. I did have a oil change a 2 weeks ago. The injectors where coded to the ECU. I will check the oil levels and check for fuel contamination. Performing a compression test will indicate a faulty injector right ? Could it be likely she is running too rich with the fuel, which means I may need to have the ECU flashed or even perhaps the High pressure Fuel Pump may need to be looked at ? Will also look at the MAF and report back.

If its been over fueling a lot it may have filled the cylinder with diesel and bent a rod.

Id bee looking at injector quantities on a Star, then do a compression test.

Report time!!!

12hr shift on her today. After reading the above and no other replies, I prepared myself for the worse.

Last stage was all four injectors had been replace with refurbished ones from a very reputable injector specialists. Was not able to do a compression test as do not have one nor STAR.

1. I had the oil / filter changed roughly two weeks ago, and had done a fair few hundred motorway miles prior. However check oil levels / temperature and all seemed to be fine certainly not worth the pound coins. From the thick heavy smoke and diesel smell I had a intuition it was more fuel related than oil.
2. Decided to look at fuel pump / lines / filter. Pulled the filter out, emptied the diesel in a clear cup. Was dirty but not shiny as i was look for metal contamination. Replaced fuel filter. (What could be blast with air was) Fired her up, hey presto the smoke had literally all disappeared. I could only see slightly more than what I would normally expect too see on a daily basis. Let her idle for awhile 10 minutes or so and everything seemed fine. Scanned her and she only came up again with the two fault codes as above.
3. Decided to take her for a drive down the down. Bad news! Upon acceleration smoked appear and white in colour but not to much. Back to square one again but this time with about another 20% reduction in smoke. At this point I had not looked at the MAF.
4. Decided to check injectors again. Stripped each injector again. Seated again, cleaned and new seals again. No engine start at this time.
5. Checked the MAF, every thing looked ok and whilst at it thought might as will check the turbo. Slight play but nothing to be worried about as she whistled like my old Renault 5 turbo lol.
6. Whilst inspecting the area decided to look at oil line. And there a tear in the oil separator breather pipe. Great Euro car parts are closed now. After a quick DIY repair using a copper pipe and metal hose clips I managed to patch up the tear. I did not know what else to do now, and as mentioned was unable to perform a compression test.
7. Fire her up. NO SMOKE whats so ever upon start up. Left her idling for awhile no smoking. Accelerate, slight white smoke but this had a much more distinctive smell of diesel. Took her for a drive and only seemed to smoke slightly when accelerating. When idle, no smoke.
8. Getting late, just left her running, made the assumption it was burn off as nearly 90% of the smoke had disappeared by now and this could possibly be diesel in the cat convertor from before etc too. 30 minutes later literally all the smoke had disappeared even under idle acceleration.
9. Took it for a drive again, no smoke at all even under hard foot. Even no black smoke, that's impressive considering she done 300k. She runs a beauty, pulls quicker than my W220 S320CDI now ;)
10. PROBLEM SOLVED.

I am not even a mechanic by profession, just an enthusiast with a passion to prove my mechanic wrong lol. Thanks again for the advice guys again in the beginning and I hope this thread becomes resourceful.

Glad you got there in the end,
it pays dividends to have a look round the engine bay regularly paying attention to signs of leaks-oil,fuel, coolant and look at hoses pipes etc for splits tears etc.
