I've had my E320 CDi 211 for a couple of weeks and there is a whirring motor noise that I can't work out what it is - please can someone tell me ?
When I put the key in the ignition to turn on the noise comes on for a for about 3 seconds, same when I turn the engine off.
Also the noise comes on when I slow right down to pull into my drive etc. I thought it may be a cooling fan, but it is a set 3 seconds each time.
It's like a tiny compressor type noise !!!!
I'm at a loss - does anyone know what it might be????
Cheers in advance for any pointers.

I'll go and look on Youtube now - many thanks for letting me know what it was
Cheers

I guess that's the same creaking/groaning sound I hear when I start my W203 320 CDI then? I wondered what it was!

I don't think my SBC pump makes any noise when I turn the car off, just on.

I get a whirring noise but it's actually caused by a disc in the front centre DVD drive spinning up - and sounds like a mini compressor.

Could it be you've got a disc in your DVD drive David?

Yes, there are CD's loaded in the changer, but it does sound more like the noise is coming from the front of the car (engine bay)
I'll take out the CD's tomorrow & give it a try - you might be right !
Cheers

That'll be your heater stepper motor failing.

Having only owned older Mercedes (W201/W124) - I'm afraid I've never heard of a heater stepper motor before. Is this a big/expensive job to fix?

Iirc the part is cheap but you need to take the dash out to get to it.
