I don't know what this is called, but I mean the thing where you keep hold of the unlock/lock button to open/close the windows.
It seems to work intermittently on my 2004 E320 CDI (only works around 20% of the time). The times it does work though, you have to hold the key directly up to the ir thing on the door handle, and I mean like directly as in the end of the key touching the black square. I've seen it working from like a metre away for other people. My sunroof doesn't close either when it rains. Could these 2 be related, and what could be the problem with both of them if not?

Could be your battery on your key fob needs replacing
That's one of the first things I tried, but no luck. Still only working intermittently and only works around 20% of the time.

Just thought I'd add, both the car batteries were changed not too long ago too, so that's definitely not the problem.

Fogged/scratched IR window in the door handle.
Broken/Corroded joints on the PCB in the door handle.

There is a great write-up on a thread somewhere here detailing the repair of the door handle unit..

oh okay I'll get those checked out I guess. do you have any idea what could be causing the sunroof not to close when it rains? could it be the pcb joint thing u mentioned or not?

Sunroof issue must be related to the rain sensor I would have thought? I take it the auto-wipers are working OK? Did the roof auto close before?

Auto wipers are working exactly as they should, and both the problems have been there since I've had the car

The IR system is notoriously poor even when new it is not reliable.

Are you aware of "Tunnel mode"?

Press and hold the re circulation button down whilst the ignition is on and all windows and sunroof either open or close depending on their prior state?

You will need to take out the IR receiver in the door and make a re-solder repair. Once repaired, you should find the summer opening/closing feature working fine. Takes about 20-30 mins to do.

I have repaired the IR receiver in my car.

Where are you based?

Northamptonshire, did you repair yours due to intermittent working too or? and having to hold the key right up to the square

Mine was working intermittently.

If you were closer, I could have helped for some food haha.
