Hiya everyone ...

my Mecedes Benz e220 cdi (2003) saloon, has a cracked
windscreen and was hoping to get a new one put in.

i dont have comprehensive insurance - and my trade motor policy
doesn't cover windscreens.

i was quoted by a local company £250 fitted.

am i getting ripped off, does anyone know a cheaper company....????? thanks for you help !!!!

The only window I ever had to replace on any of my mercs was the driver's side window on my W140. just over 750 quid

You well and truely got "ripped" off big time...!!!

Not even custom made bullet proof glass would have cost that much...!

I think you'll find that these are not just double glazed panes, it appears that because of their shape they are also a lot more expensive.

But I'll happily take advice on where you can get these supplied (OEM not third party) and fitted cheaper in case I ever am in the same position again! ;)

In my current new line of business we supply flat glazing of any size/spec/shape and have all the latest high tech equipment/machinery to do this. We get the glass in big sheets and process/toughen/cut it to the required spec. Pilkington are one of our main suppliers amongst a couple from Belgium. Pilkington happen to be the OEM supplier for several car manufacturers such as Ford/Peugeot etc. If you wanted a OEM side window for a W140 S Class then I could cut/make you one to the same spec from OEM glass (by using the other glass in the other door of your car) and I am certain that we could buy a big sheet/plane of the OEM glass for a fraction of the £750 you paid from the Stealer. We also specialise in bullet proof glass as well.

But any side window is going to have double curvature and in the case of the S class it may be double glazed as well.
The curving will bump up the price considerably.

Well, that's great, but I'll be honest: I would want the real goods from the Merc factory.

These are indeed double glazed panes (they are quite thick on the W140) with some funny shape and they have some type of colouring or whatever applied to them.

Believe me, I did a lot of calling around. The only way to get it done cheaper was to go for a non OEM solution, which I didn't want to consider.

I think the key there is the word flat.

Most car windows have some sort of shaping to them, which is applied as the glass is made.

Another thing, would your glass be e-marked, I'm pretty sure it would be an MOT failure if its not, I know it is here.

Based on my experience when I had the windscreen in my car changed, be on the lookout for changes in the performance of your rain sensor and interior light sensor. Apparently, the sensor needs to be "told" exactly which windscreen is fitted.

I don't know the price of a W211 windscreen because it was covered by insurance. I had a Mondeo windscreen (with electric front heater) fitted to the car I had at the time some years ago and it cost £375. So £250 seems quite good to me.

No such thing, Mercedes outsource glass, as they do with just about everything else.

Point taken - I should have said: I'd want the replacement part to come from the same supplier as the original one

Something that would never get checked at a MOT station here. Most of the glass we do is for commercial bulidings use etc.

£750 is still way excessive.... BUT I perfectly understand you wanting OEM glass from MB which is why fully comp insurance comes in handy as all you pay is the excess...!

Well, I couldn't get a cheaper quote. Autoglass actually told me they could not do it much cheaper either as they would have no other option but to get an OEM window - according to the bloke I spoke to at the time, there was no third party solution available at all for this particular window.

He did say that the windscreen or the rear screen would have been a lot cheaper than the side window for that car.

These days I have insurance covering the windows ;)

Fully comp insurance always covers all the windows ad is worth while as well as the additional legal cover.
