W212 Based E-Class Coupe Offically Revealed

Press Release:
Just three months after the international debut of the new E-Class saloon in Detroit, Mercedes-Benz will unveil the stunning coupé version of the new E-Class at next month's Geneva Motor Show.
The world's oldest car maker is adding a special highlight to the new E-Class range whilst at the same time maintaining a model tradition that has been the source of great excitement throughout the history of the popular E-Class.

The new E-Class Coupé offers a very special combination of two attributes for which the Mercedes brand is well known: fascination and efficiency. With its classic coupé side aspect - no B-pillars and fully retractable side windows - this new two-door car is a particularly sporty interpretation of the E-Class's dynamic design.

At the same time the most aerodynamic variant of these coupés achieves a new world best in terms of drag coefficient: with a Cd-figure of just 0.24, this model is the world's most aerodynamically efficient series-production car.

The model programme includes two new 4-cylinder engines, which consume up to 17% less fuel whilst offering a significant increase in performance and torque.

The new E-Class Coupé's standard-fit AGILITY CONTROL suspension adjusts automatically to the current driving situation. It combines driving enjoyment and excellent handling with maximum comfort.

The new E-Class Coupé will be in the showrooms of the European Mercedes-Benz dealerships and company-owned sales outlets at the beginning of May 2009.

The new Coupé offers all the technical innovations of the new E-Class series, features which customers expect to find in a sports-oriented luxury coupé. These include selective damper control, drowsiness detection, preventive occupant protection and an Active Bonnet.

As a feature specific to the Coupé, the Dynamic Driving package allows different suspension setups at the touch of a button.

Adaptive Main Beam Assist, road sign recognition and an automatic emergency braking system are other features with which the new series sets standards in this vehicle category.

The E-Class also takes on a pioneering role in the drive sector.

The new diesels and direct-injection petrol engines combine efficiency with an effortless power delivery.

The engine line-up includes two new four-cylinder models which deliver significantly more power and torque while consuming up to 17 percent less fuel.

The best example is the twin-turbo diesel E 250 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY Coupé, which consumes 5.3 litres of diesel per 100 kilometres and emits 139 grams of CO2 per kilometre, making it one of the most economical vehicles in its class.

This exemplary low fuel consumption rate has been achieved not only been because of the new engines, but also due to a number of practical measures.

These include on-demand activation of the steering and fuel pumps, the use of tyres with low rolling resistance and an alternator control system which takes account of the current driving situation and the vehicle's electrical power requirements, plus the very important contribution made by outstanding aerodynamics.

I'm not that impressed with it, Exterior it looks like a bigger clk and interior wise the seats are nice but that dash just looks "plasticy" reminds me of an E46 3 series

I'll buy a CL over this.

I like it

Utterly gorgeous - v nice job MB

Bottom photo looks like the door has been pranged with a side impact

The rear of the W211 sometimes makes the rear wheel look undersized. The W212 saloon suffers from this too. The W212 Coupe seems to exaggerate the effect further.

The front with the radiator grill star looks even more US. If somebody removed the MB branding I'd think it was GM or Chrysler.

AWSOME!!

Slick and Robust styling - Reek's 'MERC' and has great road presence.

must be difficult designing-in tradition and differentiators from the competition - all manufacurers appear to be morphing towards a common shape.

this certainly floats my boat:cool:

I like it.

I can't believe how much better than the 212 saloon it looks.

Every time I look at it, the rear side windows are just wrong.
Spoils the whole side on view.
As said before, rear wheels look to small which does not help either.

More interested in the twin turbo diesel, that sounds like a great engine for performance & economy.

If you remmoved the badges and just showed it to a group of people I doubt they would immediately say it was MB.

Which is the problem. MB look like followers who are having to overstyle the cars just to differentiate them.

Fair Comment - maybe thats all it takes -the three pointed star - so long as good quality materials, workmanship, and a bit of pioneering innovation (not just gadgets) are included in the mix.

Yes,the front for instance where else do we see the eagle/eye horizontal brow on the headlamps - maybe the answer is to go retro:D

can't see whether it has the seat belt presenters

That'll do very nicely

I don't get that silly black bit of plastic on the rear window either, no point and is silly looking. Would look far better without and guess most owners would make this mod to give the car a better, more coherent look.

Where is the cabrio one, that will be interesting and a real rival for the 6 series BMW. They need to make a drop top, otherwise MB is out of the 4 seat rag top game.

As a design it is more successful than the ghastly 212 saloon, but I don't really get why people will, and would, pay more for a less practical version of the same car.

It has my age framless doors, that mechanism that lowers the window can break with potential severe consequences (think submerging in water). Apart from style what does a 3dr car with these silly doors add, and without a B post structural rigidity would be affected badly potential damaging the dynamic qualities of the car.

Does this mean the CLS is going now?

Good question. On the whole I would rather have a CLS because to my eyes at least that looks like a two door CLS!
