W212 E220 CDI-Poor economy

I have just sold a C220CDI on a 63 plate. In 10 moths I covered 25,000 mixed miles. I always brim up and use an app to work out costs on my phone. My average over the 25,000 miles MPG 45.03 overall. Cost Per mile £0.112 . Short runs kill modern diesels. My sister in law has an Audi A6 Diesel. that does a couple of miles to work
.. it has in the last 12 moths DPF replacement, air mass sensor replaced and in the last 3 months the turbo needed a re-build. It is not just the running cost of the diesel when doing short runs it is the long term big costs when they go wrong.

If you do lots of sub 5 mile runs petrol will probably do better than the equivalent diesel for MPG.

But even a petrol will struggle to get to temperature within a mile, especially during winter, so in your case you would probably be seeing 15mpg from a petrol E Class.

Depressingly, your figures point to there being nothing wrong but the length of your journeys..

Can't you walk the 1 mile journey and do the environment a few favours?

Hi Paul, thanks for the reply, sadly in the winter a mile walk for the wife and a 2 year to nursery isn't practical, in the summer it may be an option

Yes, very true, I think I will go for a Hybrid next year when the lease ends

I can get 25 out of my c63 driven carefully that's appalling for a diesel

Yup...even my M4 (Swear word on on here I know) does better :-(

The problem you have with things like E Classes is the weight of them, they are big old lumps to get moving. It is when they start to get on a roll that they start to see good economy.

Don't bother with the e300 hybrid, for your journey you want a plug in hybrid. The e300 has a tiny battery, it won't last even 2 miles on very slow gentle running. Where it works is sitting in traffic (air con is electric rather than engine driven so stays on) and especially when you're coasting or need only a little bit of pOwer to keep car going, like maintaining 40 on a slight slope. But you need periods of braking to recharge it, it'll drain dry for you and never really recharge naturally, the engine will have to kick in to recharge battery which is pointless as you're paying more fuel then it saves. It relies on kinetic energy recovery to really help.

But saying all they your mog does sound bad. On the first mile or do if my trip it only just breaks 20, then rapidly goes up to 50. But I go straight from home onto a quiet a road so no lights/rpuns abouts etc. But coming from work is a slog, first 3 miles is at an average speed of 10mph, similarb to you I guess. I'll still break 30 in that, usual high 30s, but I start off with mend 75% charged battery which is down to 40% at the end so that's saved me a chunk.

Without it is still think you'd hit 30 so low 20s is low. Maybe an Italian tune up is needed to clear the pipes!

Anyhow, if you want merc hybrid, get c350e or e350e when it comes out.

Oh and also, diesel mpg crashes in winter/cold so now isn't idea time to double check. I've put winter tyres on and the combination wiped ten to 15 mpg off my average
