Hi There,

I've noticed a strange problem with my E63 - the backup key will unlock the car, but will not work via keyless go, or if inserted into the ignition slot in place of the start stop button.

It appears to have 'deprogrammed' itself, but very strange that it still locks and unlocks the doors normally. I have replaced the battery but it makes no difference.

Any ideas?.

Regards,
Alex

Have you ever used the back up key before?
I wonder if its been programmed correctly?

Changing the battery will only assist when the fob fails to unlock the doors.
The ignition side of things is not reliant on the internal battery.

AFAIK, the DAS communicates with the key via infra-red when it's placed in the ignition switch, getting its power from the ignition switch via an induction coil, whereas the door unlocking is RF comms. If we assume that the IR functionality has stopped working, it would explain why you can unlock the doors with it but it won't work the ignition.

However, as it doesn't work for keyless entry either it may be that the rolling code system has got out of sync - which I suppose is theoretically possible if you've used the other key exclusively for a l-o-n-g time.

Thanks for that. Given the doors will unlock but the car won't start neither keyless go, or in the ignition I think it may have been deprogrammed.

Time for a trip to the dealer. Ouch.

There’s a couple of key programming specialists out there for Mercedes keys. Worth a call? :)
