Hi all,
I have a W213 saloon , 66 plate, which has started to make some noises when turning left or right.
The lower arms have been changed recently and the noise has started to appear very shortly after that. Initially, I thought that the coincidence is too big and went back to the garage where the arms were changed. The arms have been purchased from GSF, Drivetec brand.
The noise is like a clunk/squeak, similar like a strut bearing being broken but in the same time sound a bit rubbery type ( will explain a bit later). It sounds like something rubbery is under tension against a metallic component and it escapes in steps
Things we tried, with the car lifted
- loosen the strut nut to the arm-> noise still there
- remove 3 screws
- screw which attaches the arm to subframe
- screw which attaches the arm to anti roll bar link
- screw which attaches the arm to the air strut
the noise has disappeared after removal of these screws.
After that we put a screw driver in the air strut fork ( which attaches to the arm) and tried to rotate it- > the noise has been reproduced. It seems the source is between the lower casing and the spring bag.
The car has rather low mileage, 50 k, but i haven't had the car from new. I googled to see if there is any info on air strut noises, but couldn't find anything - only bags losing air.
As you might expect, i am quite reluctant to replace the struts with £650 a pop plus labour, so wanted to know if any one else has encountered this issue or what could potentially cause it and/ or any ideas for a cheaper resolution.
P.S: i have tried to attach also a video, but the file type is not supported.
Many thanks.
