W213/S213 E-Class (2017–2022) – Instrument Cluster Flickering, Dealer says £4k replacement :/

Hi everyone,

I have a 2017–2022 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Estate (S213), and recently the main digital instrument cluster (speed/revs display) started flickering. It first happened two months ago after a long trip to North Wales (which was also the first proper run after a dealer service). A couple of days later it went back to normal. Then about two weeks ago, while waiting roadside for my partner’s car recovery, I got a low battery warning, and the next day the flickering returned and hasn’t stopped since. The central infotainment screen works fine.

I took it to the dealer, paid £200 for diagnostics, and was told it needs a new cluster costing around £4,000+. Since the car isn’t driven daily anymore, I tried charging the battery fully at home, but that didn’t help. The only common thread I see is the low battery or voltage events possibly triggering this issue, rather than the screen itself failing.

I’m now wondering if anyone here has seen similar problems on S213/W213 models. Could this be caused by battery control modules, alternator, or ground faults? Also, if I get a used cluster, could that create odometer or MOT issues, or would it need special coding? I’d also be grateful for any advice on specialists who can repair or refurbish the existing cluster rather than replacing it completely.

We've seen this before, it did require a screen replacement - we can do exchange/refurb units much less than the price you've been quoted !

You can't use a used cluster, it needs to be virginised, and all the service/etc data copied across. Also there are issues with certain ones (ghosting) and you can use the older versions on new cards etc
