Discovered that Merc don’t now supply bearing kit - just a complete hub for a lot of money in comparison- so I presumed I’d get a pair of half decent aftermarket ones-

however the Merc parts guy said that my bearings would not be replaceable as they can’t be pressed out if the original hub ?

Is he correct- surely not if gkn and others offer them as a kit for my car
2010 CLS

THANKS 🙏 for any replies

Matt

Yes he can be right. Merc dont often do push on repairs its not their model. Usually the whole part.

I replaced an entire drive shaft on my W251, i could have got the end bit seperate from a 3rd part and fixed it, but who knows the quality.

In my experience MB don't like to supply kits or sub-parts. It only comes as an assembly Sir. WTF.
I'm happy to buy bearings etc from my local motor factors. MB stuff is bought in and fails like anything else. QED.

Thanks for the replies- very much appreciated 👍

If you go down this road , be sure to buy a new abs ring/ seal from mercedes , aftermarket ones tend to give abs, esp, errors .

Well MB do fit complete hubs, they argue that way it is cheaper with lower labour time,I had not heard that the bearings were not able to be pressed out, thats a little strange.

Yes me too - especially as replacement bearing kit is widely available - but he was adamant and specific on that point which I asked him to check

There's a biggish bearing at the back that needs tapping out and a smaller bearing at the front which usually just falls out once the holding nut is removed. It's an hour job tbh . Another thing to note is the bearings inner diameter that fits over the shaft , I bought a Lucas kit and the fit was rubbish , I ended up buying a full hub and simply pushed it onto the shaft . Job done

It’s not just bearing replacement that requires an entire hub as I have recently discovered. Replacing a rusted front brake backplate on my B Class, and probably other models, requires an entire steering knuckle and hub assembly as the backplate is not sold separately. So a common MoT failure which would normally cost about £20 to fix is now in excess of £300!

Correction to the above , it's the raceways that need knocking out , the 2 bearings are floating .

I've used an SKF kit, and no issues with the supplied ABS pickup/seal.

to be honest I did both my fronts with new Hubs yes I could have faffed about for an hour a side to remove the innards and replace but hub off hub on took 30 mins a side not worth the extra hassle when I know its all done adjusted up and all new
