I purchased what I suspect is not an original Sat Nav disc from the bay.

It works, but keeps giving me a "Can't read DVD" error, which kind of ruins things.

Is this likely to be the disc itself or my car?

Its more than likely because its a copy disc, not your nav disc reader.
Its a bit of an outlay for OEM, but I'd get a kosher disc from the dealer or Comand Online.
Comand APS Map DVD Europe 2017/2018 (V18.0) for E (W211), CLS, SLK (R171), SL (R230), Maybach, S/CL (W220/W215)

The other possible option is to buy a genuine but slightly older than current DVD from ebay or the forum, that's what I've done for my NTG4 Comand. I have no idea what version your CLS has, but for my NTG4 it's saved me loads of money, especially as mine cannot accept anything later than 2014-15 withou major expenditure!

I did exactly the same thing . Copy of Ebay and has the same message so I would suggest it's the Disc.

I reverted back to my original disc and no issues.

Does the disc look home made on the burnt side ?

Be thankful it does not appear to have bricked your satnav! Ask the guys at comand.co.uk how many Comand systems they and other specialists have seen bricked by non genuine DVD's - despite the folk that have posted using non genuine DVD's successfully. I suspect it's a factor of DVD based systems compared to HDD based systems, as I gather some (older?) MB nav systems work off the installed DVD whereas others like mine use the DVD's to update the system's HDD, and you then remove the DVD (and in the case of my NTG4, sell it on to recoup some of the cost!!).
