Hi all

Thinking of swapping my w204 for a w219.

I've read a thread on here comparing the w219 to an E class. One comment mentioned something about the w219 and towbars being a problem.

Does anyone know if they are a problem and if so what problems are they?

Thanks

Mark

The W219 and W211 (E class) are the built on the same platform AFAIK. The only problem you have with the W219 and a tow bar, is you cannot fit one!
Oppose to the W211 which you can. I can not remember the reason why you can't, am sure someone more knowledgeable than me will be along to enlighten you.

One thing to note OP, just because one is available does not necessarily mean the car is designed/tested/approved for the towing capabilities.
This has been discussed before on here and the other side, hope this helps:

Can you Tow with a CLS? - Mercedes-Benz Owners' Forums

May be worth a quick phone call to your local MB dealer to seek clarification/confirmation. Good luck with your search.

The car must be type approved for towing if registered since 1998 (from memory) or else it's illegal to tow. Some cars are not sub, titled for type approval, and so you cannot legally tow with them. To be sure, you need a photo of the plate which confirms the weights for your car, it may be inside the driver's door shut.

As BD said, if there's a 'gross train weight' given on the plate then you can tow with it. If not, it's illegal to even fit a towbar.

All depends on whether M-B went through the type-approval process for that model. Generally this is based on the likelihood of the average buyer wanting tow with one.

Thanks as always chaps. Great advice cheers
