Hi Peeps,

Considering buying another 211 due to back issues but also thought about a w219 or w220 S-class, How comfortable are the front seats in the CLS or S-class compared with a w211? in particular the lumbar region.

I find the 211 one of the most comfortable cars i've ever had.

Any thoughts?

I can do a 300 mile journey & get out the other end feeling like I've driven only 30, it's one of the few cars I've had where that applies. Previous cars where that applied were a Volvo & a W211. The lumbar is adjustable, but I find it most comfortable backed right off.

Found the seats in my W219 excellent , did 880 miles in a day (return from Glasgow - Surrey) with only two stops , cant say fairer than that.

Id drove my e320 cdi across europe Austria to the hoek 660 miles no stop and felt really fresh too, How do you guys find the head room in the w219? getting in and out the front? being 6ft 1, i do have bend abit with the clk.

Appreciate the replies btw

No issues , even at 6` 2".

I hope with a back problem you get in and out correctly? Sit your ass in first , then lift both legs in together to get in .
To get out , lift both legs out together then stand up . Saves twisting the hips and spine .

Happy with my CLS seats for long runs - just bear in mind it is a coupe so is lower

I hit my head once getting in very early on, but you only do it once ;) No issue with headroom once in

This is noteworthy Gav. Once in, I would say headroom is no issue at all, however getting in and out may be an issue if you have problems with your back, as it is noticeably lower than a saloon. I loved my old 55 but know someone who sold his CLS due to struggling getting in and out because of the height. Definitely recommend trying one first.

I know you did not mentioned W212 / W221 but I had a S212 with ortopedic systems ( multic ountor - air bladers to adjust the lumbar / bottom / back / sides ) and these were great seats. Way better than the Sport seats on my old S211, which weren't the best, but they only had manual lumbar adjustment.

Having said that the seats on my S Class W221 are just a whole different level as they have air bladders everyone to ajust to your body and massage, which is great on longer journeys. I can say that if you can, please have do try them on.
Having sat on a W220 I can also say that they are great seats especially if they have the dynamic mode as well.

So I would say
W211 > W212 > W220 > W221

I've driven a 2010 W221 with front seat comfort option and those seats were excellent.

Better than the W211 E55K seats, which I found to very comfortable in isolation.

I don't need lumbar support myself but the W221 seats are very adjustable.

I'd get ones with at least Nappa and the front seat comfort option because I found the seats in my CL500 (63 plate) were very uncomfortable which had neither.

I've never driven a W220 but I would probably go with an early W221 if there are budget constraints as they are a lot more reliable apparently.

I get back issues from sitting too long, but can sit in my W211 for hours and feel fine afterwards. The seats have lumbar support, massage, and active side bolsters, but I think the driving position is the most crucial. I don't often use the extras.
Hope you find a good match. Back issues aren't nice.

W220 seats are a league ahead of w211 in comfort terms. Better than w222 seats imho.

I was going to say the same about my C219, except my journey was North Yorkshire to London (5 hours) and no break. Not a twinge when I got out either.

My 219 55k has the most comfortable seats I have had in any car in 50 years. They are the AMG multi-function dynamic seat but are like a nicely worn armchair....with grip. Same as your s211 I guess

Not that it’s a contender but avoid a 209 if you have a bad back. Terrible seats! I do suffer from back issues and it’s the one negative of my CLK. The sports seats on my A6 are - by contrast - very comfortable but you do have to sit a lot higher and more upright than I am used to in order to get comfortable. Also need to tilt the seat base back to get support under thighs. Bad backs are debilitating. I’ve been in and out of surgery and consultant care for the last couple of years now and it’s not much fun. I hope yours improves!

I’ve never found seat comfort much of an issue in general (aside from my old 212 E63 as I have previously mentioned..) but I’d have to concur that the seats in my old 211 E55Ks were absolutely superb - could spend all day travelling in them and step out feeling fine.

The seats in my GL are also pretty good to be fair, no complaints.

S-class should be decent you would think?

211 a safe choice though, IMHO :thumb:
