W220 Coolbox/Fridge

Anyone ever fitted a coolbox to a W220?

I did not find them listing a coolbox for the W220 but I think they had one listed for the W221, are you referring to that part? I believe it should fit to both models. The car however has to be equipped with skibag. The coolbox attaches simply to the skibag frame, only power harness needs to be retrofitted.

But you are not supposed to purchase that part, it should be there for me, just waiting for the price to go down a bit. :)

I've got a W220 fridge, and a W220 less fridge, I was wondering what sort of job it is to fit?

NB the W221 fridge can be a bit cheaper, what did you have in mind?

I'm not sure if I understood right, do you mean you have a W220 car that does not have the fridge and you would like to retrofit one?

The problem with the W220 is that the fuel tank is different on a car with a ski bag (or fridge), there is no room for the opening the fridge and ski bag need.

Once the car has a ski bag, installing a fridge is simply detaching the ski bag and installing the fridge to the frame where the ski bag is attached.

No fridge for me then.

totally off topic kind of but I have a mini cool box in the centre armrest on another car, and it is soo darn useful!! its been great all year round (excl the last couple) at keeping my sarnies chilled!

if it can be done, do it!

I've been going down to Spain etc quite a lot, and hence invested in a good cool box. Decent quality but does have downsides. It only lowers the temp inside the unit, so in blazing hot times the cool box only gets a bit colder, not properly cold.
What we do is put a few frozen ice packs (various sizes available) in the bottom, and refreeze them at the hotels/campsites along the way. I seem to remember we have left (accidentally) ice packs all over Italy. Other people will freeze solid a large bottle of water which they then pack.

This is still not really enough for proper Spanish sunshine, so I made up a box, with a lid, made of 2" expanded polystyrene sheet, held together with Gaffa tape, which goes round the cool box. That did the job quite effectively, although it didn't look very cute. Staying in Spain for a couple of weeks, with access to a freezer, I would cycle the ice packs daily. With a couple of bags of ice in the freezer our need for cold drinks and preserving perishables was satisfied completely.

More recently I bought one of the MB Coolbags, which looks the part. Small, tidy, and well insulated, it fits well in the rear seat on the floor. Mine, when plugged into the rear connector goes 'off' when the ignition is off, so the battery does not discharge. I've used one of those 12v discharge protectors (Maplins) on other cars and after I had twice found it had discharged to the point where it would not start I threw it away... quite a long way in fact.

I've seen other people on campsites who had small fridges with ice making facilities (albeit quite tiny) but I am happy enough with what we have.

:D:D:D

Did you use a cool box with a Peltier element for cooling or one with a real compressor?

The MB rear set cool box has a real compressor, like in a home fridge. There are portable boxes that have a small compressor and much less expensive than the MB integrated box, likely a better option for generic use.

To a W220? Don't know but I did put the fridge from Nick to my W221.

For the W221. Are you saying you took the fridge made for a w220 and put it in your W221? Or you have the w221 fridge in your W221?

Does it work well? Isn't there anything you don't like? I'd love to find a used one.

Only thing I don't like is the fact that it's too small and I can't reach it from the front seats. Also no access if 5 passengers on board.

Overall, waste of space and money.
Centre console or glovebox cool box would have been much better.

I had a MB centre console cool box in my W210 which was a very rare option but it worked well as it was easily accessible.

I see. So the next question is, will a fridge from a 220 work in a 221? Are the units both the same?

Mine is a genuine W221 fridge. I did not check it again but I think the parts numbers are after all different for the W220 and W221. One might still work in the other, even the W222 fridge looks exactly the same as the W221 fridge but comes with a different part number. It has the power wire (and socket) on the other side of the fridge, otherwise looks the same.

The fridge is not for the driver on a W221. In my opinion the fridge is justified as a cool feature (interpret that as you prefer). I would not have it if I had not been able to purchase the fridge at a relatively attractive price.

Cool. Let me know when you want to sell it, or if you know of any others for sale :)

@DieselBenz, my fridge has a 3 pins powerwire but I have no socket yet so can you tell me about the 'socket' eg picture, part number which connects power plug. I assume it is a socket+harness in one, which inturn connects to the rear SAM I think. Thanks.
