W220 S320 CDI
Hi,
First post here since becoming the keeper of a 02 S230 CDI, and perhaps a little too exuberant on a back road and now the questions start. I damaged the oil sump, and I managed to get pulled in and stopped very quickly so as to ensure no engine damage.

The oil sump was repaired, but only with a non MB mechanic, who dropped the remaining oil and cleaned the sump from the inside, and sealed it with chemical metal. The patch job does appear to be holding up well, but I have my doubts about it as a longer term remedy. Has anyone replaced the oil sump in a W220 here? Is it a mega big job with the subframe in the way.

Is there anyone here who can shed light on what I should do? Stick with the repair, or locate a good oil sump and get a specialist to tackle it?

First Post. Thanks

William

If you intend to keep the car I would get a new/secondhand sump perhaps fitted by a good independent. Trouble is you see if/when the repair fails you will trash the engine. Where are you based?

I'm based in Ireland, but have access to a main dealer master tech who does work in the evenings at home. I plan to be in the UK in the new year.

Have you an idea of whats involved in doing a replacement of the damaged sump?

W

Not too sure myself but if the guy who repaired it cleaned it from the inside then I assume that he removed it so hopefully it won't be too bad. Your master tech should be able to confirm this though.
