Hi guys

I need to replace the rear tyres on my W220 S320 CDI LWB. The tyres at present are 265/40 ZR 18. I am a bit of a novice so excuse me being dumb. Do I have to get exactly the same numbers and letters?

I have been on Kwik Fit's website and they quote the following 265/40 Y 18:

Bridgestone RE050 £176 each
Dunlop SP Sport 9000 £196 each
Goodyear Eagle F1 £199 each
Michelin Pilot Sport PS2 £252 each
Michelin Pilot Sport Extra Load £260 each

The tyres I have now do say "extra load" on them. Do I need this?

All help appreciated.

Thanks
Andrew

Where abouts are you based, maybe someone could recommend a decent tyre place near you?

I'm not sure on the 'extra load' rating, but a heavy car like a W220 LWB will probably need quite a high load index rated tyre anyway.

Yes you really should get all the numbers and letters to match!
Not sure why the car has extra load tyres on the rear, no harm just a little more expense and slightly stiffer ride quality normally.
I always check these 3 sites when in need tyres:

Low Cost Tyres - Online Tyres for Cars, 4 * 4's, All Makes with local tyre fitting stations

Cheap Tyres Discount Tyres & Japanese Import Car Parts Spares Tuning Performance Servicing Accessories ::

tyres online @ mytyres.co.uk: cheap passenger tyres, summer tyres, winter tyres and tyre dealer

Tyre Express has some good buys and I would consider the Dunlop SP900 or the Goodyear FI at around £157.

Thanks Will. Load index etc is a mystery to me.

I am near Chester.

Load index should be on the sidewall near the tyre size info - eg '101W' or whatever - you should be fitting tyres with at least a high a load rating as there was on it from new.

I can't help explain exactly what the load index corresponds to weight-wise etc, but I would try and be certain that the tyres I would be buying met or exceeded the original spec.

Any decent tyre company can key in your cars reg number & tell you what tyres you should have on.

Lot of people on here recomend Falkens google or look on e bay.

Try Costco - they have quite good price on Michelin and they do 20% discount 4 times a year. I get a set of 4 from them every year on my W220.

I used blackcircles last year to find a price for tyres for our old Audi and then when I asked Kwik Fit for a price they asked if I had seen them cheaper, so I told them the black circles price and Kwik fit managed to beat it. It looks like there is good margin in tyres.

The load rating is the maximum weight a tyre can safely carry...in your case 101 equates to 825 kgs....you need to fit tyres wth AT LEAST this load rating for insurance purposes....
