W220 Transmision refurb, help!

Hello everybody, Iv just got back from mersea to have my auto gear box looked at as its been playing up, turns out its broken, something to do with one way clutch not working, now i need a new transmision and wonderd if anybody could point me in the direction of a reliable source, thanks.

I used merc repairs in croydon,they refurb my wifes c 200k transmission two weeks ago and seems to be working fine. my car had been to merc epsom and twice had to be towed 4 miles away from epsom.Merc repairs price was not best but it was convenient them being close to home so if it breaks down again they are very close. was quoted from a transmission specialist nearly £600 cheaper but if it goes wrong its a 100 mile recovery. they also warrented their repairs for 2 years

Hi Ben,

A simple sprag (one way clutch, there are 2 in this gearbox) failure shouldn't warrant a new gearbox, typically we would charge around £425 all in to sort that out. HTH.

Really? that is what he said is wrong, im not an expert though so cannot question his oppinion. Its an auto transmision place on mersea island, essex, anybody have any experience of them? Iv been quoted £2000 + vat. there should be a web site for people to list there garage experiences!

There is such a section on this forum titled Mercedes specialists across the UK, might be of some help to you.

Plus, there's nothing wrong with questioning an "expert" opinion, if indeed they are true professionals and masters of their trade they will be only too happy to explain fully and in plain English and maybe even demonstrate in a "show and tell" why you need a replacement gearbox rather than a more cost effective repair on the original. I do it all the time, there's no front end force field at my gaff.
