Sometimes when I unlock the car and open the drivers door the door mirror will not unfold, it unfolds on the passengers side ok, any ideas please

Alan

My drivers mirror sometimes stays folded, but a gentle push always gets it open. As a result, I de-selected auto folding in the convenience menu, and now only ever fold them if parking in a narrowish spot. If the motor totally fails, they are expensive to replace.

My W211 has been showing the same symptoms. Approx 1 in 4 times the driver's side mirror won't unfold. A double tap of the fold / unfold button has always sorted it out.... except on one occasion when it refused to unfold until 6 miles into a journey when it suddenly corrected itself.

Have had the dealer investigate twice now, but they have shed no light. It seems to behave perfectly when they look at it. Interested to hear any others thoughts on this symptom which sounds the same as Alan's.

I also had trouble with my W211 passenger side mirror. Sprayed some WD40 on plastic cogs in mirror casing and has been fine since. Should imagine dealers would have done this or maybe not?

I will try that, did you have to take the casing apart or just spray where it rotates

No, make sure the mirror is in the closed position and gently ease the gator. On mine I could just about see a White plastic cog and sprayed around that

Hi,just repaired a similar problem with my w203. the problem turned out to be the extend switch button, which is part of the headlight switch assembly. replaced headlight sw. with used unit(easy) cost £52 from breaker. Merc want £186 plus vat for new one! If you Email me at [email protected] I will give you details of used supplier. cn

Had the same problem. Down to Brooklands, new mirror £158 + £84.32 Labour +vat = £ 290.78. Thanks goodness for Warranty Direct.

It sounds like the loom to the mirror has been damaged because it gets caught eventually with the mirror folding/unfolding and gets damaged, making it quite intermittent. The old MB folding mirrors use to do this (W210, W220 etc etc). I thought they would have fixed this issue on the newer cars.

I have removed a wing mirror on a W211 (facelift) and repaired the loom for a family member a few weeks ago. So i would check this before buying a new mirror.

Of course if you have a warranty like Peter, no worries!

The motor packed up on mine.

Thanks for all the reply's, It seems to be working again ok , I will spray the cog and see if that helps

Alan

I had exactly the same problem and the only way to fix it was to replace the mirror with a new one ... sorry!
