Mercedes has announced plans to slash production of the S-Class.

The company's Sindelfingen factory will be cut down to one shift until the next-generation model goes into production in 2013. In the meantime, the second shift will be reassigned to C-Class production.
S-Class sales have fallen by 27 percent, in the past eight months, to just 5,227 units. This is due to several factors, including slow sales in China and Europe. The age of the model certainly isn't helping but that should be rectified soon enough.
As we have previously reported, the 2013 S-Class will feature evolutionary styling which was recently previewed by the Aesthetics S sculpture. Engine options will likely include the usual suspects, but there could be a new plug-in hybrid variant with a 3.0-liter V6 petrol engine and a 60 hp (44 kW / 60 PS) electric motor.
