Hi, I have a diesel S class 3.2 06 plate which is has some transmission issues.

I am hoping that someone can help me with their experience/knowledge.

The car has 140k miles and the torque converter has been replaced tt try resolve the issue but it hasn't made any difference. The issues is below:

When shifting between 2nd to 3rd gear, if you're still pressing the accelerator, the RPM will start going higher and it feels although it is in neutral but then it shifts to 3rd gear.

Once in 3rd gear (and this happens only in 3rd gear), whilst still accelerating, the car jerks at around 2000 rpm then all continues as normal.

So I am assuming the problem is around the 3rd gear, something might be worn out?

The gearbox has had the oil changed and before that it was never changed for few years! (company car).

I am hoping that someone can help me! The obvious and most easy but costly solution is to replace the transmission. I want to try the small things first.

You need to get the car to an Independent with Star and get a proper road test and diagnosis or alternatively a good transmission specialist.

Does it do it when shifting manually???

yes but its a lot worse when in automatic as you cant skip gears and for some reason 2nd gear jerks a lot but when on manual no jerking whatsoever only on 3rd the same as in automatic.

So it's not actually jerking with the upshifts? It's doing it under throttle at around 2000 rpm?

Automatic:

1st gear: fine
2nd gear: jerks once before 2000rpm
changing to 3rd gear, car revs (as if in neutral) then changes to 3rd gear
3rd gear: jerks at around 2000rpm
4th gear: fine and the rest also fine

Manual

1st gear: fine
2nd gear: fin but changing to 3rd gear, car revs (as if in neutral) then changes to 3rd gear
3rd gear: jerks at around 2000rpm
4th gear: fine and the rest also fine

You really need the fluid level checked in the transmission. I would suggest a star session to rule out any power output issue from the engine. Exhaust back pressure sensors and exhaust manifolds breaking up and jamming the turbo can cause bad jerking whilst accelerating around 2000 rpm

thanks does it have to be star? because the guy that changed the torque converter might have done a star diagnosis as he fit that to try and fix this issue. But at the end he says it needs a new transmission but I want to see other options first!

It really does need to go to a speciaist to have a look. At least you will get a straight answer
