Looking to purchase a W221 S500 for my wife. She doesnt like white, silver, grey. Has to have reversing camera and be in good condition inside and out. have finances in place, have been looking for a few months for the right one as we are not desperate, finances are in place for immediate purchase for the right car, we are based in surrey near m25 junc 9. thanks

If she doesn't like white , silver or grey then it will probably be a black airport/funeral car lookalike. You don't mention your budget.

You could also buy the car you want without the camera and get one fitted.

Well the W221 is a great bargain at the moment,a lot of car for not much money, just what amount were you thinking of paying, there is a cracker on ebay it is met red and has a great spec it is a 2007 car with a private plate.

As above - focus on finding the right car, if for some reason it doesn’t have a reversing camera I’m sure you could have one installed.

Speak to forum sponsors ‘COMAND’ in Lightwater if you need one fitted - they’re the experts on Mercedes electronics/retrofits :thumb:

Barely a cat's chance of finding a W221 in such colours with a reversing camera fitted, either from new, or as a retrofit.

My recommendation is to find the right car, tough enough as it is, and then fit the camera you need.

On colours, let's hope she likes black, because if she doesn't like black, silver, grey, or white, she's looking for a tiny, tiny proportion of W221's, and lots of people would buy colours such as blue, if only they were available, which they're not.

Sorry to bear bad news, but a quick trawl through Autotrader should confirm my comments.

Oh, and don't pay too much. The S class is a fabulous car which very little appeal in the secondhand market. (Twas ever thus).

Buy one - they're great and often extremely well maintained - just don't pay too much.

thanks for all the replies guys!! Managed to get a good deal on a two owner car with lots of toys and full service history and only 79000 documented miles on a 56 plate. Didn't buy a s500 at the end, went for a s320cdi after talking to a mercedes specialist, who advised that repairs, maintenance etc would be cheaper on the diesel and also at moment more choice and more of a bargain as there aren't many s500 to purchase but plentyof diesels. So far she drives really lovely, interior is still a lovely place to be, and as she is a third car to run as a runabout I think she will do really well!! Thanks for all the help, looking forward to getting back on this forum as I sold my r230 sl500 a few years back after being a forum member for a couple of years!

Every inde I've ever spoken to has suggested avoiding diesels like the plague.

I suppose some garages might prefer their customers drive cars which will bring them more business!

The S500 would have been a lot more reliable to start with albeit the diesel should be better on the juice.

The W221 is a lot better built than the W220 so hopefully you won't suffer too many problems on it.

Wow .... thanks for all the responses. As I have already bought the car I will have to wait and see I suppose. Already have two other V8s, so perhaps need a v6 with lower fuel costs, i do about 20000 miles a year but across the three cars. Was thinking about using a mobile mercedes mechanic based in Tunbridge Wells to travel to Surrey to service the car and my brothers sl500 . Has anyone used Mobile Mercedes-Benz Mechanic Tunbridge Wells these guys, or have any recommendations thanks everyone!

I have no experience of the mobile service you mention but what a mobile mechanic can achieve is governed by access to the car, an oil and filter change ? no problem , can be done without lifting the car.
Anything a bit more involved might need a lift and an indoor space preferably.

The company on your link appear to be professional.

I'd be willing to bet that a V6 uses hardly any less fuel than a V8 in the real world. Partly because they are not far apart and neither are incredibly-frugal, but also you would have to push the V6 harder slightly to get the same performance on the same weight of car.

So in recent years I've always gone V8!

What area are you close to - there is a decent inde not far from Tunbridge Wells called AMF?

Thanks Pete, John for the replies. I am based in Epsom surrey, but work near westerham in kent so both localities would suit. I previously used Mercedes Guildford for looking after my sl500 for over a decade, but have not been too happy with their service as of late, especially since I think they merged with Sandown mercedes group? the service is no longer personal and the care i dont think is commensurate with how much I was paying. Hence I am looking at alternative options for managing the mercs now. Thanks for any tips/advice!

John, are you a member on sportsmaserati forum as well? :) i really like your avatar!

You are only an hour from PCS in Horndean who are highly recommended on here.

I was whilst I was researching buying a Granturismo but that dream came to an end when I couldn't comfortably fit in one (head rests at angle because of the roof pillar and the seats don't go back far enough for me).

So I keep the dream alive with pictures but unless I had a substantial windfall, so I could get the seats modified to resolve both issues, then that is where they will stay sadly!

I would dearly love an early facelift in Sofisticato Blu as in the picture (although the colour shown in the avatar is not spot on - they have Photoshop'd it as it is a little less in your face as that but close).
