    Hello guys

    I've recently bought a Mercedes W221 S600 V12 twin turbo.

I noticed that when the car is idling I feel the car shaking a little bit. The revs don't drop at all and when you rev the car slow or fast the engine is actually very smooth... there is no hesitation. After driving the car for about 30 mins to 45 mins then the car is very smith on idle, the shaking goes away

There are no warning lights on.

It says it's not due a service for quite some time but I will get the service done anyways.

Could it be the spark plugs?

If anyone has come across this issue before please let me know

    Any info/advise is much appreciated!

Presuming you'll get it serviced at either a dealer or a specialist, their STAR will point you in the right direction, certainly on that engine...!

I normally work on my own cars and do all the servicing and repair work so I was hoping to do it myself even on this car but if I need to plug it in a star computer then I'll have to take it to a Mercedes specialist!
I thought maybe somone has had the same issue before

    LOL :D

By the way I'm not looking forward to changing 24 plugs on it!
I thought the cl500 was bad with 16 but I'm guessing this will be even more fun to do........ NOT!

Coil packs may be an issue on these engines?

Well you do not say how old the car is but it must be at least 8 years old maybe 12 years ,could be the engine mounts that is one heavy engine,as whitenemisis says coil packs can be a problem, try to pick a good indy who knows these V12's my one in Colchester keeps a number of these beasts serviced ,but as always you need a star on it ,it is just not worth winging it and changing plugs when you have 24 to replace,it has to be star every time .

    Thank you guys

The car is a 2006 model

I'll check the engine mounts too, that's a good shout....

I'll do some checks myself but if I can't find the problem I'll take it to a Mercedes specialist. I know one near me that is very good and he helped me out with my Cl500

I started the car up today and I'll try and explain the problem.

The engine revs normally (or so it seems to me) but as I build up the revs I feel the car shaking/vibrating and I feel a vibration throughout the whole car.
When I drive the car it pulls very hard but I noticed as I drove the car from a cold start it was shaking in second gear at 2000rpm as if it was misfiring and once going over 2000 rpm it went smoth again

Another thing i noticed is that when it's idling the interior lights go dimmer as the car is shaking.

Could it be there's not enough power? I did put a brand new battery recently.
After starting the car up after a week of being parked up it did struggle to start at one point and some warning lights came on and car went into limp mode just like when I first got the car with the dead battery. Turned it off and on again and the lights went out but it did feel weak to start up.

The car is parked up at the moment as I have other projects going on but I just want to get some ideas what it could be.

I pulled the engine cover off today and boy am I going to have fun working on this engine!!!

    UPDATE!

I got the car up on the ramp and checked the engine mounts and the nearside engine mount is gone!

Now my question is, would the engine mount cause this vibration that I feel throughout the cabin and the slight shaking when engine is idling?

It's strange if its also misfiring because once the engine is warm, you honestly can't even hear it running standing next to the bonnet and it sounds so smooth and pulls VERY hard, no hesitation at all

Who knows. Change the mount and see what difference it makes. Should be noticeable.

    Lol

    Thanks guys.

I made the letters bigger because I thought it would make it easier in the future if somone searched the forum with the same issue and found my thread and wanted to know what problmes were found as sometimes when a thread is long you spend quite a bit of time catching up

It's not an urgent thread, car is off-road.

I guess sometimes its easy to get misunderstood

    Thanks anyways ;)

"Now my question is, would the engine mount cause this vibration that I feel throughout the cabin and the slight shaking when engine is idling?"

Absolutely - I just replaced the mounts (engine and trans) on my car as I had the exact same problem. Only really noticeable between 1000-2000rpm. New mounts and now smooth as silk, as an S Class should be

Worn engine mounts would cause excessive vibration on start up/idle

    Hello Chris,

Thank you for you post, that's great to know!
I'll be ordering the mounts this week. Looks quite tight under there so I hope it's not too much of a headache to change them

    Thanks again!

At least one problem is found. My friends keep telling me that every job in this car is a nightmare as there's not much room.

W221 is as easy, and cheap, to maintain as a W211 - except for the V12 engine. And even then the problem is mainly that people can't be a*sed to do routine maintenance of plugs / coil packs. Early owners will have paid for main dealer maintenance without a second thought. Third owners: not so much.

Insane value for money motoring given the original six figure purchase cost. And SO much cheaper and reliable than a Bentley or Rolls

That's good to know and like you said it's just in the engine bay that makes it a bit difficult to work on as there's not much room there.
Its a shame really that people end up buying such a nice car and not maintaining it! The S600 I've bought has only had one owner from new and it's been serviced in the same dealership he bought it from.
