Hi ,

I have a w246 b180 with electronic parking brake, i thought when i first got the car if you park up and open the driver door without putting the hand brake (EPB) on the car knew and did this automatically so as long as your seat belt wasnt plugged in.

I caught myself yesterday doing it, i forgot to press the parking brake button to apply the handbrake and the car started to roll until i stopped it.

Has my car got a fault or am i mistaken?

I know my SL doesn't, but I believe some Mercedes do?

Mine doesn’t set itself. What does happen is the transmission goes into park when you take the key out.

My wife has one of the very last W246s, a B200 manual. It doesn't set itself as I leave it 'chocked' in the garage with the park brake off. I haven't looked in the car's handbook but an online one (although not UK market) I have makes mention of it applying automatically if either Distronic Plus has brought the car to a halt, OR it's using Brake Hold AND one of a number of conditions also apply, one of which is opening the door. However, whether all markets, all years' production or autos/manuals are the same, I don't know.

It should be outlined in the handbook.

This is the problem with automated systems on cars, people get used to them and can rely on them, ie my neighbour who reversed down his drive into the wall at the bottom (there's a curve towards the gate). He used to wait until the parking buzzer sounded and then turn (he never looked behind him). Unfortunately, the buzzers didn't work and he hit the wall. Ooops.
