Hi
So having read all that I can about space savers, run flats etc I am not really any more the wiser! :wallbash: I can get a space saver here with a 125/90/16 tyre which equates to my 225/40/18's re circumference but when I looked in my boot there is a big plastic tray with a tow hook and a warning triangle in it, effectively taking up 1/5 of the space for a spare!
Does anyone know if there is actually a spare wheel that would fit in the wheel well in the boot of my 2013 B200 Sport? Or would I be better just getting a full steel spare and keep it in my garage? :dk:

Any help would be greatly appreciated as I intend to ditch the run flats for ordinary tyres (if possible)!

Ta

If there's nothing in the boot, don't you have run flats fitted? Mine has a can of gunk and a compressor as it's got normal tyres. Also surely Sod's law says if you have the spare in the garage that's not where you will need it?

Yes I have run flats but would like to change them for ordinary tyres for a smoother ride, less expense and more of a choice! And yes, having a spare in the garage is not ideal but if it wont fit in the boot...
You have 'a can of gunk and a compressor'. I already own a compressor so maybe if I bought a 'can of gunk' it would be better?

Another concern would be the nice alloys! If I get normal tyres and and get a flat would the rim be damaged because of the low profile tyres and lack of rubber they have on the sidewall?

I have a W245 B class sport which came with a space saver, good for 50mph and as many miles as you need to do, that's according to Mercedes Benz. I have had to resort to the spare once and had no issues with it, save the 50mph which on a motorway is soooo slooooww :D My tyre size is 245/45/17 so a fairly low profile and I don't personally like run flats.

Manufactures have definitely gone backwards with run flats and no spare wheels!:fail

In my opinion the spare also acted as a safety cushion in the event of being rear ended:crazy:

Modern run flats have come a long way and are much better than they used to be but the ride will be better without them. I am not convinced about the set up in mine as Sod's law will be I'll get a flat that the gunk won't fix. Regarding the wheels, most punctures will be fine. I hit a pot hole in my last car, burst the tyre but the wheel was fine.

Off to local tyre shop today to get rear and fronts swapped; then when they are done I'll be getting standard tyres fitted, possible Goodyear Efficientgrip Performance and a couple of cans of Slime Quick Spair for the boot!

If it helps the spare wheel from the previous model will fit the W246 but you will need to keep a 5mm spacer as well to get around the front brake disc. Works perfectly for me.

If you then take out the plastic storage tray in the subfloor and trim the boot lip where the floor clips in you can store the tyre under the boot floor

When we picked up our B200 Sport ride was shocking on the roads around here the car rattled like crazy. Not mention in 1 year went through two front near side tyres due to pothols. Changed to a set of Falken FK453 and its like another car plus no more bulges in side wall due to potholes.

Yes run flats are good but I think youwould need to spec a B200 Sport with Sport suspension deleted to use them if at all.

space saver w246

Hi Magic, im waiting for my B180 amg to arrive march, so i want to sort a spare out, at the mo my car is a B200 cdi and want to use the space saver, did you have made the 5mm spacer, if so have you the dimension so i can have one made, also can i use the jack off my old car.
cheers.

hi magic, did you have to cut much lining out the boot to fit w245 space saver also did you fit a strap or some locking nut to hold wheel in place, dont fancy doing it to a new car, but if its the only way.

Only things cut where couple of welded in stud bolts in the boot floor. Just cut them smooht with a dremel. Then its the black trim piece that covers the boot lip and goes down the floor panel clips into. This had to be trimed. Best thing is offer up and you can get a snug cut. No need to tie the wheel down as once in it was snug. I can take a picture if you like

Took a couple of pictures to help. The B did not have the vario floor and I susppect if it did whole process woudl be easier as you could just leave the floor on the higher setting and it be fine.

In my case with the space server the floor still shuts fine flat but had to remove the clip hook as it hit the tyre and was useless anyway as had nothing to clip to as the trim was removed in that area from the boot lip. Still it fitted well and no rattles or movement

Magic you have made a nice neat job, thank you. and Merry Christmas.

thanks just wish my uncle who now has the car hoovered it more often :)

thats typical, after you tried to keep it looking good. my mates the same his car looks like rubbish bin has been tipped in it. so what car you in now. im still waiting for my b class march 1st ordered it in september.

Thanks Magic, your post gave me the confidence to butcher my W246. The space saver fits in perfectly. Tried the space saver over the Sport front brakes and I do not see a need for 5mm shims. Stillafb

The space saver fits over the w246 wheel but I found if you bolt it in fully and spin the wheels it just rubs slightly against each corner of the calipers against the inside of the spacer saver. Unless yours has a different profile (always possible)

Just double check as I thought the same its fine till I then bolted it and actually spun the wheel with so little clearence the few quid on ebay spacers seemed a good idea

MAGIC 77, have you the outside diameter of those ebay spacers. ta
