They are very straight forward. Make sure you replace all the seals. They are usually very very reliable, only ever done a couple on that engine. Just start undoing the mounts for it and it should be fairly obvious how it comes apart.

I removed mine on an earlier 115 years ago.
I remember it was a knuckle skinning job.
I replaced the core for a fraction of the cost. The exhaust side bolts were well rusted into place so good soaking in penetrating fluid needed.
I replaced mine as the centre bearing allowed movement. I needn't have as it is a floating bearing, the new wasn't really any improvement. But I did get chance to check out the free movement of the variable veins. But release the arm and you can do that.

Again if memory serves,
it will be stiff until disconnected.
I don't remember if it should perform a travel test when the ignition is cycled.
You won't test it for travel by revving the engine as it will be engine load dependant.
Isn't it a piddly circlip to release the arm from the actuator, easily dropped of course. I wonder if you could get a blocked off funnel under it before removal?
Yeh I've had the circlip off but the connecting rod won't come out of the actuator arm. I thought it might be actually attached to the arm, but why would they put a circlip on it then? I'll have to have another go later. Cheers for the help
