Wait for new reg or not?

C220
So my c220 is scheduled to arrive on august 12th.

Should I delay registration till 1st September (if I can do that) to get the new reg or just get it on august 12th?

I'm leaning towards accepting it on the current reg year on the 12th, especially since it's on a 3 year company lease (my own company) and it probably won't make much difference to value in the end.

But will I regret it in 2 months when I see all the cars with new regs??

Usually the dealership registers the car, so the ones in their show rooms (not test drive cars) don't have number plates on them and get regged when they are ready to be sold.

I'm not sure what happens on ordered cars though, they may have an automatic registration process I can't opt out of. But assuming I could...

Personally, I'd wait, if possible, certainly from my own experience.

In the 70s and 80s, when the reg was changed once a year on 1st August, my company car was always changed in late July. The worst one was when I took delivery on 27th July. 4 days of current registration.........

OK, I wasn't paying for it - in fact I suspect the company got a good deal from the dealer, as I wasn't the only one in the same boat - but the car on my driveway was still only "new" for a few days!

New reg for def.100%.
Amazingly some peeps will tell glibly "so what its just a number?,life goes on blah ,blah"

If the registration bothers you get a personalised one then it doesn't matter in theory my car is 17 years old!

How old is it in practice?

My JZR carries a T suffix plate, given to it by DVLA or whatever they were called then, in 1998 when I finished building it, as many of the parts were from a 1978 Honda bike, so how old does that make it?

I must be in the minority then. I was expecting my new Merc in Sept and dealer called last week to say it was arriving on Wednesday. They asked if I minded registering on 31-7-14 for their numbers or wait. I said ok and it's being delivered.

This is a private purchase, but frankly to me it makes no difference having a 'new' car with 'new' reg. Also, now it seems most of valuation in 3+ years time will be based on year, mileage and condition, not what reg in year it is.

So for me it was an easy decision to have car now.

cheers, Steve

Agree but you have done them a favour so you should get something. Free service etc.....

As it's a lease , personally it wouldn't bother me either way , depends how much you want the car and whether you want to wait an extra month , also the car won't be worth no more or less to yourself as it is leased ......
So it all does depend on your Desire to have 14 , or 64 lol

@K17 the fact that you are asking for comments on this to help you decide means that it is bothering you (even if it is only a little). As such I fear that it can only eat inside you every time you look at the 14 plate, whereas it is unlikely that the delay in getting the car registered will eat inside you every time you see the 64 plate.

I think you have answered your own question...

If it makes no difference to the value of the car when you sell it, what does it matter? If it is important to you to have the latest registration, well....why? If perceived status is that important to you, good luck to you; but it's the car you are driving, not the registration plate.

I've met one or two people to whom it seemed to be desperately important to have the very latest registration; they tended to be people who would only wear well-known brand-name clothes as well. Personally, I don't need other people's names on my clothes to define who I am.

IThis is exactly what I'm thinking. With a logical business head on only it doesn't really matter one way or the other because after the 3 year lease it won't make any difference.

Actually my immediate reaction was who cares, I don't. But then a few friends told me I should just wait the two weeks as it's not a long wait and I'll regret it later. I actually do wear designer clothes but it's only because they last longer and fit me better (not all of them but if selected well) and I never wear anything with a label plastered across it!

There's three reasons I'm debating weather to wait:

1) will it affect car value later? Am I being like a kid at Christmas who can't wait even tho it's the right thing to do? I think this has been answered it won't make any difference to value.

2) I'm in the process of doing up my new house which I'm not living in at the moment. I'm using my parents old car to go there in old clothes to work on it and probably will carry on using it for the next few weeks because I don't want to trash my new car. The inside gets super dusty and dirty really quickly. Honestly this is the main thing that's making me think twice. But then at the same time I won't be at the house every day, so maybe I'm overthinking this one.

3) will I regret it when I see lots of 64 plate cars. This is the least of my concerns as it only (barely) matters for about 5 seconds. Then no one cares especially me! In total honesty I like the 14 plate better for some reason.

If you read my initial post, I actually want to accept delivery in august and all I wanted was to get your views on if I was being an idiot!

Mine new car comes on Saturday - the number is irrelevant to me - personal plate or not. "New cars" are fun the first few times... eventually its just another new car.

Billions are spent every year by motorists buying new reg cars.If you look at all dealer ads they scream ......New Reg .
Also whilst mileage, condition come into play for resale value so does the number plate .
Next we'll be told that Brits buy lots of German cars but actually they don't give a damn about badges.
