Hi there,

I have just recently bought a new S320L (99 V-Reg), and would now like to add some options, but would like some advice.

1) New alloys:

I currently have the stock 16" rims, but would like to upgrade to 17/18" ones. Would the 17's offer beter ride quality than the 18's? Ride comfort is a priority.

where would be the best place to buy them? I want originals or very high quality replicas.

2) Tinted windows:

I currently have very lightly smoke tinted windows, but want them darker, for privacy. I don't want them totally blacked out, but still quie dark. Quality is of paramount importance here, I got a job done on my old car, and bubbles appeared afer a couple of months. This cannot occur again.

Would it much more expensive to actually replace the glass as opposed to using film?

Again, some advice on where to go would be great.

3) Satnav/Command:

I don't currently have any type of satnav, but would like it. How much would it cost to retrofit the original command system? Is it possible to fit the new system, or is only the old one possible?

Where could i go besides Mercedes?

4) Rear air conditioning control:

Is there any way to retrofit this?

I would appreciate any answers to any of the questions, and once again, let me stress that qualiy is top prioriy here. I would rather go without than have a second rate job.

Thank you.

Regards,
Bob.

It should be possible to retro fit command, as a few people have done it on other models.

I would have thought 17" wheels will give a better ride will be quieter than 18".

Hi

Congratulations on the new car :D

Had an S430 on the 16 inch rims, 225/60 16 tyres, gave a lovely ride with fair handling but with quite a bit of roll and plenty understeer, possible to roll the tyres on to the side wall when cornering hard on a twisty road .

Drove a S classe S500 on 18" Amg wheels (solid spoke style) I think the tyres were same as my current car 245/45's 265/ 40 ? , makes ride a bit harder a tiny bit more fidgity more road clutter transmitted (manhole covers etc) but still comfortable, seemed to have more weight on the steering (good thing) and the car did seem to grip better, good looking wheels suit the car.

Got a ride as a passenger in a standard S320D on Brabus 19" rims with wide very low profile tyres, ride was quite badly affected, vibration transmitted constantly from uneven town road surface and thumps come through as well. These wheels and tyres really badly affected the character of the car.

Never driven a 17" wheeled car, but maybe the best choice as you wish ride quality to be the priority as it was affected by the 18"s on 40/45 section tyres (still comfortable car though compared to anything bar a 16" wheeled S class :D)

Smoked windows, my s55 has them, the cars are double glazed so replacing the glass is expensive, best to just get them coated and that can be removed as well if required.

I've got the rear air con in the S55 the unit is situated in the centre box between the front seats ( looks like it could just drop in), although the standard front air con was very good on the s430, having a second unit in the back makes it a very powerful system.

You can retro fit the old style Command Sat Nav (maybe the new one as well ?) and the rear aircon. Dealers will do it but as you say will charge the earth. My S430 had the old style system but updating the disc improved it a lot.

You could try one of these independants to do the work (not used any of them so can't make a recommendation)

If you fancy having a go yourself these chaps at mercedesshop. com seem to be able to advise you on anything, I know a couple of chaps were talked through retro fitting Command on ML series vehicles.

Good luck

If you try searching for window tinting you will probably find some threads about it, but I think Pentagon got a mention a few times, with favourable comments.

I know of a few people who have used Tint-R in Nottingham and have been very pleased with the results, no imperfections at all.
