But I can't create a msdos start disk (option is ghosted) on vista - how's it done or can Windows delete itself somehow ? Cheers
 
Normally you would just boot from the installation DVD and when you get to select the disk to install on choose to format it first.
 
fdisk.exe back in the day, still think it works and is a standard .exe file up to XP, not sure after that as I have come away from the IT world!
 
What Robpow said, Vista's install process has a partition manager, just bin the ones you don't want and then repartition and reformat. No boot disks required.
 
Thanks, all sorted now, the BIOS had strangely 2 sections to change to get the computer to boot from cd Rom :)
