Am looking for a cheap dateless of cherished plate for the CLK55. Cheapest on the DVLA site is £245 (all inclusive of fees), I have tried unsuccessfully to get one on eBay, so if anyone has one on retention that they are willing to sell for less than £245 (inc all fees) please let me know.

The one I have my eye on on the DVLA site is - A8UMG - but don't necessarily wish to spent £245.

You can buy NI plates for £20 or £30 quid on eBay, plus the transfer cost.

You won't get anything cheaper than £245 all inclusive as far as I know. Seems a bargain price to me - about 3 tanks of fuel equivalent.

A8 UMG isn't dateless .... it's an A reg ( 1982 ) ...

Do you mean a proper dateless plate ( like in my signature piccy ) in which case , you may have to budget a bit more ...

probably going to get in trouble from MODs for turning this into a discussion but..... I realise that A8UMG isn't dateless, probably comes under the 'cherished' category (DVLA definition not mine), but it successfully disguises the age of the car I suppose. I did have a proper dateless plate a few years back (2004 I think) 592XKL I wish I had kept it, I think I paid about £400 for it from Ebay.

that A plate is basically dateless when on a CLK.....

my reg is E11 and then my initials. it looked great on my 2003 7 Series, and fully hides the date of the car.

however now that its on my W124, i bet many people think the W124 is actually just an E reg w124 rather than the M reg it really is.

i think it depends on the car its on, whether its dateless or not. basically determined by whether the car was in production when the reg plate letter was new.

i think any plate under £300 that disguises the car's age is quite good - doubt u will get better other than an ireland plate that look a bit cheap in my opinion - you could go for a MBZ xxxx one i guess at a push though.

why not do what i did when i had my clk and go for something like T888 CLK. that was my plate at the time and it looked fab on the car.

Are the OUI plates irish and cheap?

I always thought that they were cool.

Anything like OUI , OIL , FIL , BNZ , MBZ etc etc are all cheap Irish plates ... better to leave the original reg on than to put an Irish plate on it ...

At the risk of upsetting people - I don't really see the point in 'cover' plates.

What's wrong with the current plate that's on the car? Anything other than a decent private plate (ideally with a meaning to it) seems pointless. What does it matter how old/new your car is - I don't get this really!

Almost all NI plates look naff, as do many of the DVLA offerings. It makes a vain statement IMHO and detracts from the vehicle rather than adding to it. Nice 3x3 plates with your initials or something - fair enough, looks 'classy' not 'cheap/desperate'.

Why not spend £20 on some brand new Mercedes-Benz branded plates and fit them cleanly, and then spend the difference (~£200) on something worthwhile - eg a full correction detail on your vehicle, or a wheel refurb or something - would make your car look much nicer than a 'cheap' meaningless plate.

Sorry if that sounds a bit blunt, but all IMHO obviously :o

I have V11 plus my initials. born in 1952 (V.11) 5&2 or 7 looks ok on my c class.Got it when I was 52 been on my last 3 cars now.

I have a NI plate, I suppose it's because I live in NI though:D

IMHO only the 4-digit NI plates are naff ... which I guess is why they're cheap.

A 3-digit one can look OK ... particularly if the number is relevant. Something like "BNZ 500" on a 5 litre, for example. But that will cost a lot more.

Sorry I think all the Irish ones look naff on quality cars, 4 digit ones fron £60 just look wrong, 3 digit ones not much better and your paying the same as a proper date less xxx xxx plate.

I bought SLX 280 serveral years ago for £400 and its currently leant to my brother on his wifes A class, looks great. You can still get similar plates but expect to pay £600 to £1000.

The DVLA auction site can be some good buys, failing that the DVLA normal site is the cheapest place.

What Does the plate you have looked at stand for?

Are there any F1 and your initials available? I like the look of those...

Wearing the age of your car for all to see is a bit like having your clothes size written on your back! No ones business but mine! :p Anyway, how do you know what plates mean? Plates mean different things to different people, just because it doesn't say KEV1N (which I have seen by the way) doesn't mean that it is meaningless to the owner.

I do agree with this (maybe because I've got 3 x 3 plates :p )

Well the most obvious reason is, number plates will increase (or at least stay the same) value, whereas other stuff spent on your motor is spent and gone. People think nothing of spending £400 - £500 on repairs/new tyres/whatever when the same money could buy something you can keep forever.

My two plates mean something to me, because they both came from motors I used to have: a 1958 Land Rover and a 1963 Land Rover.

My cars are not my cars until they have my plates on them.

SLX 280 on an A Class is 'great', but BNZ 280 on a C280 would be 'naff'

(And no, I don't have any NI plates!)

My car came with the 'private' plate C16 RDS (RDS were the previous owners initials), means nothing to me so asked for a valuation from one of those onine companies and had it for sale with them for £400 since I bough the car, no takers!, Just waiting for a Citroen C1 to be bought by the British Racing Drivers School and Im in luck....

I think a dateless plate can add a little sparkle to a car's appearence, but not high on the list of things I'd spend my money on.
