Or something similar .... Need a cheap 4wd for the winter.

Please email me at [email protected]

Cheers!

Ps - based in south but happy to travel for right car. Bigger engine the better ..

Look out for Audi A8 V8 Quattro's on ebay. I nearly grabbed one for under £1k before opting for the SAAB as a run-around car.

something along the lines of this:

Used Audi A8 4.2 Quattro for sale - PistonHeads (Ref 1802531)

Cheers, am keeping a close eye on ebay. Forgot about pistonheads so thanks for that. The 96 posted is a bit worse than I am looking for as happy to spend 1500ish but swap of mine plus a bit of cash main reason I thought worth posting on here.
Am a big Saab fan too .... Shame none are 4wd?

You don't need 4wd in a Saab.

Having driven a few times in the snow in my previous 9-5 Aero HOT auto, I had to disable the ESP in order to get it to misbehave even slightly.

It was very capable and it keeps your ass warm too.

Great car for that.

Our A8 Quattro was useless in snow even with 4wd yet Saab 9-5 went everywhere If you are looking for a high powered 4wd car to be good in snow Subaru legacy is the vehicle you want and plenty about for the money you want to spend :thumb:

Having just ventured into the world of Volvo (bought a 2002 S60 D5 Auto mile cruncher), after much deliberation and research...the V70 has the same engine and apparently front wheel drive is good in the snow, Auto has W setting for icy roads, its what the police used...however if you want the 4wheel drive version XC70 they are cheap too...

Volvo XC70 2.4 D5 SE 5dr Geartronic IDEAL FOR THE UPCOMING WEATHER

Front wheel drive version..
Volvo V70 2.4 D5 SE 5dr Auto TAX AND TESTED

If serviced and looked after these Volvo's can do big big miles...

I did also look at the Audi Allroader but after looking at reviews on the net they have bad air bag suspension issues, labelled a money pit...

Good luck!

You'll do no wrong in a VW Golf Diesel with winter boots fitted.

You don't need a huge engine to make swift progress in poor conditions.

I've had Volvos for over 30 years on and off, don't go anywhere near the 4x4 unless you are buying new, the 4x4 system pack up regular this in turn causes auto gearbox failure (not many Volvo autos go past 100k without attention even the fwd ones) you also wont be able to keep pace with the tyre bills as you have to change all 4 tyres at a time as it buggers up the diff if you dont. If you want an estate then the Subaru Legacy Outback is your best bet and one of the best daily drivers I have owned. Audi Allroad is good but probably out of the price range

Don't go near the Allroader for reasons I stated above...although any car has its Achilles heel....

I did read about auto box issues on the S60/V70 but having spoke to a view Volvo specialists it depends if have been heavily used tow cars...that said I might get my ATF changed, just cant make up my mind...

Cheers, good to know and will have a good look at the Saabs out there. Been on my bucket list for a good long time!

Get a Citroen with Hydro suspension, they are great in the snow due to the soft suspension and being FWD.

That's interesting about the a8 in snow. I wonder why ... With the weight and traction you would have thought it would be ok ... Good to know though.
I have looked a bit at legacys ... Drive a few when they were new... Just a bit anti Japanese cars. The way they are built puts me off with all the plastic and odd layouts. Perhaps I need to be more open minded though!

Stiff suspension.

Cars with stiff suspension are very poor in any conditions other than dry and smooth road.
For snow or mud you need soft suspension and lots of articulation.

Sorry dieselman I know you love em. I just think he would be better off with a proven four wheel drive system in the snow. The audi Quattro cars are very good indeed

Only on older models that pitch like a drunken sailor. Modern models are too stiff so don't work at all well.

A simple demonstration.

I am a big Volvo fan too ... Both those seem good buys and the estate space handy as this will be the ikea run car! Had been looking at v70 awd so forgot the xc70.
Had also seen the reviews on the allroad. People seem to be replacing them with standard shocks which is a shame.
Thanks for the input!, much appreciated!!
