Wanted SL60 AMG

The two SL60s in MB Enthusiast mag. this month are the same ones that are on Auto Trader, by the way.

From the spec. the red car appears to have standard suspension (AMG suspension was an optional extra that I don't think is listed there). Not necessarily make-or-break, but something to be aware of. Many people assume that an AMG Merc automatically has the AMG-modified suspension.

As mentioned previously, the post-facelift cars are more desirable (for the better 5 speed gearbox etc.) - I would personally hold out for one of those.

Re. owners, several when a car is fairly new and still very expensive is no big deal. But by the time a supercar is 11 years old and 'affordable' there's a big risk that the last few owners won't have exactly cherished it ... particularly if they knew they weren't going to keep it long. Things like thrashing the engine when cold, using cheap supermarket fuel, etc. ... so be careful, even if the car has a full service history.

anyone know what this code extra is?

957 AMG technology package (с 01.01.1992)
extension tube on the roof, front left

Nothing conclusive, but we talked about it here .

I looked at an SL60 with the samne thing...

Hold out for a couple of months - the spring weather tends to bring a few more out on to the market.

Also, the best way to know condition is to have the car inspected by an expert before you buy. FMBSH and few owners is not any sort of guarantee. There are lots of useless MB dealer service centres (All of them???) and many 1 or 2 owner cars that are well thrashed.
Be prepared to travel - I bought mine in Scunthorpe and had it inspected by an excellent local MB specialist.
I'm on holiday in the states at the moment but PM me if you want more info (I've owned 2 and spent weeks searching each time) - I'm back next week.

I wouldn't buy a car without a FMBSH anyway, so more often I look to the number of owners. If it doesn't meet my criteria I won't buy it - even if that means not having one.

I would usually agree with the above comment but in all honesty i've had my car just under 3 years and am the 3rd owner, i have never had it serviced/maintained OFFICIALLY by MB however this doesnt mean its any less cherished. i valet my car every weekend and all my service/maintenance work is done by a fulltime MB mechanic outside work hours so the stamp may not be in the book but in a roundabout way its still has a FMBSH. i do believe in general you have to have a standard that has to be met and a level of caution must be used when buying a car :)

That's quite right, but for post '98 cars a FMBSH is essential for Mobilo Life. I had some warranty work done on my SL and without it would have come unstuck.

The Full Merecedes-Benz history is a selling point that WILL add money to the vehicle. Having a car privately serviced without a stamp on an older car is understandable but..... When it comes time to sell you will unfortunately be saying exactly the same thing as the street sellers, except your telling the truth.

Beware though because dealership stamps can readily be purchased on E-bay!!! Make sure you see the documentation that backs up the stamps in the service booklet. If it has had more than one owner then the stamps should usually match the ownership area (I accept there will be legitimate exceptions to this rule) I am merely suggesting that if there is one dealership address then just have your eyes open to the Ebay stamp rouse.

Good luck,
John

Slightly OT but this is the reason I'm being cautious about the CL500 on eBay.
