As above? Is it vacuum or cable operated please?

Mine works occasionally but will stop when it feels like it or simply not engage. Could be a dirty switch on the stalk? But I figure if it cuts off when it should not then it is a vacuum or cable issue? Just looking for what to check please.

Where is the unit located please?

Sounds like the control unit needs to be re soldered or replaced

This^. Common to have dry joints at this age. But stalk also a possibility as is speed sensor pick-up on back of speedo. But try ECU first.

Most likely this is due to dry joints in the amplifier module , located above drivers footwell to right of steering column - a biggish silver box about the size of a large bar of chocolate .

Brake pedal switch....
