WARNING - DVLA online car tax fraud

I renewed my tax online at the end of January, disc arrived within 3 days and I don't think I've seen anything untoward from my account. Although I will be checking it just to make sure!

Thanks for the warning. :)

they all do it.
it is how they can make more money. all government agencies do that including the councl tax offices that sell your info to lenders annd businesses.
directly or indirectly no matter what anyone says, it seems the motorist really pays this country

Actually I have been giving this a lot of thought and I reckon you are all over reacting and worrying over nothing. You are just being scaremongers and trying to get us all to panic and you should be totally ashamed of yourselves.

What next are you going to get us all to believe -- DSS losing discs with our personal info on or the MOD losing laptops from back of cars with vital defense secrets ? Tut Tut...behave....:D

I don't understand what is being suggested and don't understand where the flaw is? Is it suggested that someone is cloning, or copying our card details? Can they do this no matter how we pay, In other words is it a criminal that will copy the card details no matter how we pay or is it someone sat at a computer within the DVLA complex and are they somehow managing to copy and paste my details? Freeze my details on the screen and then writing them down on a piece of paper?

These are questions from an illiterate computer user that wants to better educate themselves.

I have very recently taxed our car online but being tight I used the debit card system to save the extra few £'s. Is this system also open to abuse and has anyone definitely experienced this?

Thanks for the heads up and it will be interesting to see how this develops. I will be still using this system.

John

I don't understand how the DVLA employees would see the data, as Sp!ke mentioned earlier. With PCN telephone payments at the council, they are processed 3rd party, we don't even see the card details, a credit against the "case" simply appears on a payments reconciliation.

The only reason for giving the heads up was that the only payment I had made with my credit card for some time was with the DVLA (desipte the warning) and no sooner had I made the payment but my credit card company was on the phone querying the payment and two subsequent minor payments made to WH Smiths and Waitrose and then putting a stop on my card.

I always use credit cards for online payments because losing a credit card is better than losing a debit card.

I hope I haven't unduly worried anyone...if only I could get hold of the actual broadsheet article that started this.

i used it to renew my tax for the gl and so far everthing is ok:) will ave to keep an eye out on my funds now..think i will go to the post office to renew the clk tax... thanks for the warning..... jon

I personally think you have acted in good faith and thanks for letting us know. I have asked questions because I did not understand how this fraud could work

Sadly, there are a number of places where your card/pin combination can be compromised. Skimmers on the hand held card readers and dishonest employees, usually. I'm careful about using debit cards unless I'm sure of the recipient. (debit fraud empies your bank account, which can be inconvenient!, credit card fraud created a big bill which you can address while not being peniless...)

if you hold on to your card as i always do, skimmers cannot get it.
if you cover your pin cameras can not see your number or onlookers can not.
many people buy things then hand their card to the cashier.
i went to the argos once. When it was time to pay she said card please.
I said i will stick it in myself. the machine did not work so she said give me to swipe manually.
I said no. get me a chip and pin that works or i am off and i will not be swiping and signing. Of course the machine mysteriously started working and after the transaction i reported the matter to ARgos and my card company.

Also try to use cash machines situated only inside the bank and certainly not them ones in gaming centres, pubs or off licences that charge you £1.50

I never go out so at least I cannot have the card cloned or 'skimmed'?? and the only time I ever use the debit card is when taxing our vehicles. :)

Thanks for the update

John, I hope you didn't think I was attacking your post, I was purely using it to add more info to my orginal post. :)

Cheers

Good advice.

The place to be careful is petrol stations.... Miniumum wage casual worker gets a couple of hundred pounds to put a data recorder between the card machine and the computer. Records card number, expiry date and pin of every card used, then the data is sent abroad to somewher that coesn't use chip cards, just card/pin.
Within a couple of hours, your account is being drained. Worth around £150k per garage per day at its peak. A lot of petrol stations have gone back to the old card/signature system...

When chip and pin first came out my wife bought some Christmas presents from a local jewellery shop. Several weeks later she noticed on our bank statement that there had been a second purchase at this jewellers on the same day for £800!! We never made the purchase and my wife had used this new chip and pin which was supposed to be the best, most secure way of making a purchase.

You can imagine that I was not backward in coming forward and as a result of complaining our local bank manager paid me a courtesy visit to try and explain how this fraud had occurred. But to this day I am not a happy bunny regarding the circumstances and am not thoroughly convinced about what I was told.

The excuse we were given was my wife made her purchase and carried out the correct procedure in complying with chip and pin, after she left the store another customer allegedly 'purchased' an item but 'forgot' to pay for it? The shop assistant somehow took the card details from her machine?? (please don't ask me how as I don't know) and then wrote in the relevant place 'Card Holder Not Present' As far as I was concerned I had money stolen from our account and the bank passed on my complaint to their security department who allegedly investigated this incident and the outcome was.......... They were convinced the shop assistant made a genuine error! We were compensated for the inconvenience, but I'm not convinced about the claims of how secure chip and pin really is.

I have past tthis information on solely for our information and cannot answer any questions because I have never used chip and pin and would not know a chip from a French fry. This saga happened to my wife.

When getting my road tax I just go to the Post Office with a personal cheque - that way no scamming happens and I have always done it like that!!! ;) :D

Best hope that nobody writes down your bank account details off the cheque and sets up a standing order like poor old clarkson. :)

Besides, I dont think personal cheques will be around for an awful lot longer.

A cheque that has got your bank account and sort code out on show.
When taxing i go to the post office with cash.
