Hi, a very new member here, so sorry if already wanting advice so soon.

Have been given quotes for extending warranty by Merc(Mondial) Tier 1, and Warranty Direct Performance Luxury Care. Merc quote is £639, WD is £735 (although just got phone call saying they might come up with better quote).

My inclination is to go with the Tier1, as although still insurance based, is 'backed' by Merc themselves. But that means having to get car seviced by Authorised Dealer, whereas there is a good Indepedent here quoting half the cost for service, and means am not tied into Dealership prices.

What's others opinions? I could, of course, not get a warranty at all, but for the sake of 'peace of mind' should some major issue crop up, I am inclined to go for some form of warranty cover.

Just be careful that on the WD one, if you go for dealership repair rates cover, then you have to have the car serviced by a dealer.

I'm amazed the WD one comes out dearer - in fact the MB price seems low, I thought they were around £1000?

Thanks for info... must admit that thought that if went for dealership rates it would give me the option to use either, but from what you say, appears to be same requirement as Tier 1 to have to use Dealership.

As to the MB quote, I also was surprised and said so on phone when asking... was told that rates had been severely cut back last September. I've got an email with the price confirmed, plus full policy info.

The WD chappy tried to go on about the fact that they cover consequential loss, but MB do not. Also some confusion about satnav/audo cover.... MB def does cover, the WD policy says not in sample pdf they sent, but on phone the guy said it did... which makes me suspicious already.

You stil need to go to a dealer to get your car serviced with a thrid party warrenty, even though you can get your less than 3 year old car serviced at an indy and they have to honour the warrenty so long as the car was serviced to the same stadnards using genuine parts?

Thats just crazy.

Take neither and put aside the £ when/if required.

Yes, but have heard horror stories of even simple things going wrong costing the earth, so for me, it really is about 'peace of mind'.
Am aware that after-market warranties are not usually worth the money, but when thinking of a car that is worth more than a normal 'white good', in my case am willing to pay what seems to be a 'reasonable' figure. If the MB quote had been in the previous 'thousand and over' cost, it might be a different matter.

Considering that it's an insurance policy, I've always been uphappy with the quality of WD's paperwork. My car has a bunch of "optional" covers, including sat nav up to its full value, but apart from a couple of emails assuring me all will be well, they're not detailed in the policy or the schedule.

I've taken the view that I'll assume all will be well and that they can expect a world of hassle from me if they try and wriggle out of paying.

I did read somewherr that with BMW's extended cover, also through Mondial, you can use an Indie for servicing now. Would be as well to check that before relying on it though.

With WD, you can opt for different labour rates. If you go for full dealership rate cover then, if you want the car repaired at a dealership then servicing has to be done there. You can take it to an indie for servicing if you like, but you can then only get the Indie rate for repair work.

Really? Wow! I'd hate to think what my quote would have been before September then, as in November I was quoted £2500 for one year Tier1 for my 2010 ML..........

What car is this for?

2010 E350CDI Avantgarde (265)

Still under Approved Used warranty until Feb, renewal in Feb if I take it up.

I would take the Merc warranty, you don't get much for £639 in repairs at Merc these days. Had a couple of bushes replaced on my c63 - £483 but under warranty.

£639 is a bargain for Tier 1

Did it have more than 60,000 miles on the clock?

I remember seeing comments they'd really increased the prices on AMG models - maybe they've "realigned" prices and dropped them on more ordinary models? I remember getting a price for my car when the 3yr warranty ended and I'm sure it was around £1000 - WD was half that.

To me, £2500 for an ML shows just how dodgy MB think these cars are.

As I put earlier, was surprised myself! Was expecting it to be in 4 figures, but I've got email confirmation of price above. Musn't jump the gun though, as can't actually renew until 21st Jan, ie a month before current warranty expires... lets hope there isn't a price increase between now and then!

Nope, only 34k mileage... don't think can get Tier1 if over 60k on inception of policy?

And am I right that if you let the warranty expire then take out a new policy then a ridiculous 'registration' fee applies?

It's an insurance policy for peace of mind...

Said that, my 2006 C-Class so far had the grand total of around £200 of repairs in its 7 years on the road (apart from service items), so had I taken out the extended warranty I would have been out of pocket by now.

Like any insurance scheme, expensive repairs are offset by those who drive reliable cars and thus pay the premium but have no claims.

Maybe the low'ish price Mondial quoted was because in general the W212 is reliable?

Peace of mind is what I am willing to pay a 'reasonable' price for.

The question about 60,000 miles was for boxbrownie who said he was quoted £2,500 for his ML.

Years ago, Tier 1 was up to 59,999 miles, and Tier 2 was 60,000 to 100,000 miles at point of taking out the warranty, but now you can have either at any point up to 100,000 miles - you just pay more if you want Tier 1, and a lot more if you want Tier 1 at mileages greater than 60k!
