waste of money?

But either way, employers can't usually afford to pay as much as their employees would like.

That's not really what I said though...

My point is that I like my staff to feel as though what they're doing is more than a job, I want them to feel appreciated, and if they can help push my businesses on then it's only right that they should feel the benefit of their dedication if it results in better profits. If they are lazy and don't want to be trained to better theirselves then they won't last long working for me.

And up to press I'm getting good results.

....your ideology may dangle the carrot but too many people get left behind which is to the detriment of all of us.

My ideology is to do whatever works for everyone's benefit. On a personal level I don't care if it is Socialism, Capitalism, or Communism. I am even happy to go and live in a Kibbutz.

I have no ideological preference other than avoiding hanging-on to something which clearly does not work just because a hundred years ago someone thought it is a good idea.

The Aristotelian explanation of gravity is that all bodies move toward their natural place. In the two thousand years that followed, our understanding of gravity did not evolve much until Isaac Newton sat under the apple tree and turned physics into an empirical science. The 67P landing is a direct consequence.

If you asked people a thousand years ago if it would ever be possible to cure the sick without using spells or witchcraft, they would have thought you mad.

The day will come when systems of government and social structures will be based on emprical evidence as to what benefits the most people for the longer term.

Our descendants will think us mad for building societies based on ideas invented by political philosophers, without Academic research or proof... and they will say that this is why we had so much poverty and unhappiness, and made so little progress.

ISIS are trying to take us back a thousand years to the times of the Crusades.... why do these philosophies still exist? ISIS fighters know the science behind working their weapons. Why is there still no empirical science behind how to built a happy, prosperous and fair society?

Yes Nick, it's a waste of money...but those doing the picking would probably disagree.

And why, despite the empirical evidence that is available, does society fail to learn from its mistakes and those of others?

Such a day will never come.

To varying degrees, systems of government are based on what benefits a powerful few and their vested interests (whilst doing enough to keep sufficient numbers of the proletariat on-side to ensure that the system can continue).

And no revolution, from ancient times to the Arab Spring, has been able to change that in the long-term.

I always wonder when is it new MPs are let in to this big secret.

Probably when they are taken out to lunch by professional lobbyists and their corporate clients or when they bunk off for the afternoon to sit on a board meeting at one of the several companies at which they hold directorships.

Correct, and this is precisely the reason why for centuries science books were written in Latin and locked-up in monasteries and in private libraries in the Vatican's vaults. And today we have public libraries and Wikipedia. Change is possible.

No need - they already know it - in fact this is the reason they are trying to get into Parlamaint in the first place...

I disagree, and perhaps today we started something new right here on this thread - and in five hundred years, when political ideology will have long died and peace and equality will reign on all mankind, the prevailing social structure will be known as the "nick mercedes' 'Waste of Money' system of government " :D
