Water is getting into inner skin of bootlid (CLK 208 coupe)... lodges at bottom & runs out (into boot) when bootlid opened.

- Have removed refitted lights, then tried again using silicone sealant.
- Have tried talc on the main rubber seal (on the body of the car) - stays dry
- Spent ages with hosepipe, but can't find source of leak as water seems to build up rather than getting wet instantly.

Any ideas / suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Try the number plate illumination surround. I think they are bloted from the inside under the trim. Seal might be leaking.

Tried that (& number plate fixings) previously... but thanks for replying so quickly.

I think its got to be the seal then. If you have exhausted all other areas? How about adjusting the boot lid catch so the lid closes more firmly.

I seem to be getting this as well now the weather has turned against us.I do suspect the boot seal to be the culprit,so I tried to lift it up slightly so it sits tighter to the boot lid with some success.I replaced the boot seal on my last car as it was leaking like this.As I remember it wasn't that expensive to buy and I fitted it myself.

Thanks for the advice... have measured the panel gaps either side of the bootlid... only a millimetre difference but that could be causing the problem... will try at the weekend.

u may also want to check the drain points, make sure they are clear of debris

Found it!

The (factory fitted) tape around the underside of the bootlid that hides the bad welds between the outer & inner skins of the bootlid had started to perish... a very tiny blob of silicone has cured it.

Thought the reason Haynes didn't make a manual for the CLK was because it wasn't needed... fortunately the Mercedes workship CD's are readily available on ebay & there are some very helpful people on the MBClub forum...
...Thanks for your help

Hello,

Sorry I know this is a very old post. I have the same issue. Water in boot lid.

I've replaced the boot seal and had the lid closure adjusted (it now sits slightly below level/flush, making a very tight seal).

I've also had the rear light clusters re-sealed.

I still get water inside that drains when I open the boot.

Please can someone tell me the exact location of these "drain points" I have had a good look and have not seen anything. Mind you, I don't know what I am looking for either, is this is hole in the boot lid or the boot cavity?

Since looking at the post I have re-inspected the boot lid itself. I have also noticed a tiny area where the two skins are apart in the bottom right hand corner.

Thanks,

-- Dan

If its got a badge on the bootlid the badge has 3 pins and mine had some water stains from these blob of silicone to be sure.
