water pump E430 113 engine

have a lot of play on the viscous fan can move it back and forth. would this be the water pump bearing and how easy is it to fix.

So long as the pulley it's attached to is moving with it, yes it would be the pump, usually noisy though, new pump, not to bad a job if your handy with the spanners.

will i need any special tools. i do have star external and internal socket sets.

You will need a spanner to undue the viscous coupling possibly some instant gasket as well, it also maybe an idea to replace the belt as it will have to come off, don't forget to remember to take note of the route the belt takes, maybe draw a quick diagram before you remove it.
