The wifes 1997 C240 has started a metallic grumbling whirring noise at the front I thought hmmm sounds like the water pump and its quite noisy, the v6 engine normally purrs quite silently. I put the engine stethascope on it and the noise is definitely from the front end but sounds the same no matter where i put the scope up front, usually when the water pump is noisy( in my limited experience ) its probably already leaking a bit, not so here ,coolant level is normal & unchanged .The Top idler pulley seems ok , but there is some play on the Fan, but only on the Fan it doesnt seem like the Fan & the Pump are rocking just the front of the fan .
Suppose for further diagnosis I need to;
Remove Fan and see if noise is still there
Possibly then remove the Belt and run for 30-40 secs and see if noise has gone tho that still leaves the pulley or the pump
Any other tips or suggestions ?
