2002 W203 C class sport coupe fitted with a Delphi watercooled 190Amp alternator.

I have never heard of a watercooled alternator in a car. Must be terribly over engineered. Has anyone played with one?

So, to my questions. Can it be disassembled to fit regulator/rectifiers and brushes and if it can where the heck do I get them from? Has anyone had experience of overhauling one? Or do you just put normal alternators back and plug the watercooling lines? Heckishly expensive items! I'd like to keep it standard if I can.

I would imagine an ordinary type 190amp alternator would get very, very hot and not last long hence the watercooling to keep it around 90 degs, the temp of the engine coolant. It looks like a bit of a pig to remove too. I suspect it will have to come out from below after removing the ARB. Hey ho, I like a challenge!

Some of the big engined BMW's had them- numerous videos on youtube about removal and strip down- a job best left to a alternator specialist I would offer or simply buy an exchange unit. I am puzzled your car would have one its deffo non standard* - wonder if it was Public Service vehicle in another life? Replacing with a lower output [ non water cooled]alternator might be a distinct and cheaper possibility? Can't comment on how easy that would be sorry.

    * only other possibility is if your car had the short lived sequetronic semi automated gearbox which might [ speculation on my part ??]have used a lot more current and extra electrical power would be needed?

Thanks Grober. Great info. Read all the seq gearbox posts, don't want one of them!! Mine apparantly was a PSV but without the blues and two's on the roof as it's a panoramic one which I love. Couldn't find out exactly what and where it served though, just hit a brick wall of silence. They did forget to remove a VIP pass from the folder in the glovebox, maybe I'll hook it out and start again.

As for the alternator, well...Dronsfields breakers seem to have one but I need to confirm it's the same before I commit to it.

    Onwards and upwards!

    Thats a hefty lump!
Got one for £60 now. Delivered Weds/Thurs.
Monday I'll order the 'o' rings, a poly v belt and might as well do a coolant flush and replenish while I am at it. Oh and the headlights are yellowing so the bumper can come off to get at the full lights and while thats off I can clean the intercooler and pipes and sort out the leaks from the turbo. (actuator or wastgate leaking or being leaked onto). Shee'll be good as new.

Think I might need a chiropractor after that.
I love my car, she is the most comfortable'ist one I ever owned but also the most needy. Then there is the rust.........Nah, another year won't hurt. :).
