There are lots of different classifications for the starting characters of the VIN, WDB, WDC, WDD being perhaps the most common ones. If you get the whole VIN and PM it to me I'll run it through EPC and tell you exactly where it came from originally.

Do all MB VIN's have the same number of characters.
i.e. Would a MB Van have the same length VIN as say a CLK?

Is my V221 a truck then, the VIN starts with WDD? Or do you mean B and some other characters mean passenger car?

It's Mercedes own designation - Passenger Car, Cross-Country Vehicle, Bus, Truck etc.

I don't know what the D means I'm afraid - Limousine?

My A class starts with WDD !

Actually the first three digits are for a "world manufacturer code". The 11th digit is the manufacturing plant.

One or two of the first letters of the world manufacturer code are for the country, WA to W0 are for Germany. The last or the two last of the WMI (world manufacturer identification) are for the actual manufacturer.

I did not check further but I remember WD being claimed to refer to West Deutschland. Perhaps Benz and Daimler could be related.

I have no idea then - having had a quick look around there are numerous conflicting statements.

DB = Daimler-Benz for example.

All Mercedes (and smart) models have a VIN starting with W. This would originally have shown that the car was assembled in Germany but these days it used irrespective of the country of manufacture.

As Diesel Benz says the next 2 letters identify the manuafcturer. DB was obviously first used in the days of Daimler-Benz. Some models are DC for DaimlerChrysler. Some are now DD - maybe they ran out of DB and DC numbers.

The "World Manufacturer Code" pull-down menu is used to select or enter the desired World Manufacturer Code or parts of it.
The World Manufacturer Code identifies the country in which the vehicle was produced.

The W is where the company is registered, W is Germany hence Smart, that are actually built in France (just over the border!) are still W. The VERY early ones (like mine) are TCC which is from when the company still had Swatch involved with it and it was Swiss registered!

This is what I thought first but there is something that does not match completely. The list whitenemesis gave had other letters even if the MB headquarters have not been moving a lot.

Like a Vito would be VSA, could it be because all are built in Spain (I'm not even sure if all are, or is it if "most" are built in this country)?
