It's not normally something I agree with, but I think that your lad needs to go in the army, you'll find that once he gets over the shock of initiation, he will love it.
My wifes good friend had freakily identical problems to your own and took her son to see about enrolling when she thought all hope was lost and at the end of her tether. The change in the lad is unbelievable, he is deeply ashamed of what he put his mother through and is now a fine example of a Yorkshireman instead of the bumbling pot head he once was.
Obviously, this doesn't work in all cases but it's worth a shot.
The lads dad has more than likely been blabbing about his attempt at being a horticulturalist and someone a bit tasty has got wind of it and gone and cleared him out, giving him a Scarborough warning while they're at it as well.
