It had been a wet, wet and very wet weekend ......... typical April weather at the Rhineland region where the Nurburgring nestles.

Saturday was the 24hr Nurburgring VLN Championships. Ironically, the weather was perfect. Dry and cool, with plenty of grip. First time I saw proper track prepped cars go round the Nordschleife in flesh, and in pretty close proximity. The speed these cars went round corners was astonishing, let alone the unbearably loud exhausts especially when you're less than 30 feet away.

Late finishing of the race means track closed for the rest of the afternoon

Sunday started off dry, and the emergence of the usual car park poseurs which seem to take preference towards a certain Italian brand name .....

Soon after, the heaven opened and it chucked down continually for the rest of the day. Still, I managed to beat my own record for doing 22 laps in one day  I thought the wet track was a good opportunity for me to take things slowly with a new car I was unfamiliar with, and to concentrate on the lines around the Nordschleife.

The CLK, driven in auto around the Ring, was absolutely useless :( Going into corners in the wrong gear and with the gearbox kicking down mid or exiting corners was downright dangerous  Absolutely no control whatsover. The 3.5L engine doesn't have a lot of power lower down the rev range, in fact frustratingly weak the lesser side of 4000RPM. Coming back after my first lap I thought to myself, 'this car is pretty sh*t!'

Determined not to give up so quickly (although the temptation was there as a perfect excuse to change cars). I spent the rest of the day exploring the CLK in 'manual' mode. The 7-G tronic gearbox locks up the torque converter in full manual mode and gearchanges are very quick and crisp.

Much better! ..... Keep the revs between 4000 - 6500 RPM all the time and the engine pulled quite well. Averaging 10 miles to the gallon, I managed to burn 100 litres of fuel on Sunday. I must say, after this weekend, I would much prefer to paddleshift around the Ring than change gears conventionally with a gearstick and clutch.

The chassis was surprisingly nimble and turning in was very good. Plenty of mechanical grip given the soft suspension setting (despite the use of H&R springs). As such, clipping and riding on kerbs to get the lines as right as possible was surprisingly easy. The ESP hadn't been intrusive. That was another worry there. It came on when it should and let me play around a fair bit until my talent ran out.

All in all, the CLK didn't disappoint despite the initial impression. I spent the whole day learning my new car and in the end, pretty satisfied with it. However, more power is definitely needed and as such, I am now officially on the look out for a replacement CLK55 before my next trip :D

But the best thing about the CLK ......... the drive there and back. Absolutely brilliant! Totally effortless. Cruising at 120MPH on the autobahn is what Mercedes are built for. What a machine!

And the weekend was not complete without a few head turners at the Nurburgring.

Great report and thanks for pictures

As for the track cars being quick, it blew me away at how quick my brothers track car is around a track compared to a standard road car.

Before you laugh its a volvo yes volvo 480 and we have taken V6 Clios, lotus Elise and many many bmws roound various tracks. Its properly set up being volvos corporate day track car at one pont in its life.

I had a 330ci at one point and round bends I would have no chance keeping with it.

If your into your tracks maybe get a properly sorted track car for the job, you will be amazed. As a road car is always a compromise.

Great pictures and your car looks very nice.

How did the tyres hold up? guess the wet weather actaully helped?

Here is my brothers toy, actally make it even more fun being a volovo when we pass stuff...

Thing is, I don't want a specific track car. Too much hassle. I want a reasonably good compromise, with an auto gearbox. I want to drive my car to the Ring and back in comfort.

The CLK 350 is not a bad car at all, but not with the gearbox in auto mode around a terrain like the Nurburgring. You'll end up in the armco. Imagine going down a turn off camber, with steering lock, at 2500 RPM because it's downhill, hit the throttle coming out, gearbox kickdown 2 gears, the rear end will just snap round.

A CLK55 would be a lot more linear than my 350, due to the added torque. And the slowish throttle response can be improved with a Sprintbooster. And they are pretty good value for money now :D

Sounds like a great weekend!!

CLK looks so good now with th 19's.
Great write up as useual.

Sounds like a great weekend shame about the weather but great pics as expected. You are probably right about CLK55 would do much better on the track. Good luck with hunting for one, there are some good deals out there at the moment to be had, i even looked at one yesterday and going back Friday to see if i can do a deal, failing that i have my heart set on a 'Black Series'. Think i am finally ready for the real thing, but i would still keep the Kleemann couldn't bear to sell her just yet.

Let me know how you get on with your search for '55'.

Funny, I seem to remember saying that a while ago ;)

I suppose my point is the money may been better spent on a CLK55

Must have been a great weekend! Great cars there too, I'm pretty looking forward to going myself one day :)

Great report !!! Just for a matter of interest, how did the brakes cope and how far are they worn down as a result ?

Whoever took the pictures above did a very good job, the photography looks almost professional.

Yes  ........ The 350 is reassuringly adequate for everyday use but it's when I go to outings like these, I find the initial concerns with fuel cost, insurance premium and mantainence completely overwhelmed by the fact that the 350 has a 100BHP less.

Problem is, the CLK55 is never going to stay stock!

I have aftermarket Brembo GT brakes on the car. The discs could glow red hot and they will still work, consistently. What I did over the weekend was very light work for the Brembos, no noticable wear on the pads and discs.

I don't know how well or badly the stock Mercedes brakes would cope.

Thank you ;) ......... apart from the pics of my CLK in action, which were taken by Jochen of www.frozenspeed.com
