...after all of these years, someone ripped the badge off the bonnet of my E270. It was always going to happen at some point.....

....I've narrowed it down to a handful of hours on Tuesday when it happened!

No dash cam in parking mode , or cctv to suggest who the culprits might have been ?

You can get a new , genuine MB , bonnet star on eBay for about £14 compared to the £30-odds the stealership wants for exactly the same item .

That was what I found a year or so past when I took my newly acquired W124 through a car wash , and discovered that a previous owner had stuck it in place with Araldite or something similar , and it just fell off !

Went straight round to the dealer as I didn't want the car to be 'naked' and got one straight away , then thought to buy a spare , and got the same item from eBay , exact same MB box , complete with hologrammed seals , for less than half the price .

It can pay to shop around .

Good excuse to swap the old fashioned upright badge for a far better looking flat badge!....every cloud and all that! Only Mercs before about 1980 look good with the upright bonnet badge ....just in my opinion of course!!!

More importantly any bonnet damage?

No, the dashcam I have is a fiddle to change from regular mode to parking mode, it's just not practical. Though the driving footage shows me entering the gates of RAF Henlow with the badge on and leaving RAF Henlow without the badge...........so I know the parking spot it happened.

Maybe so, but I did rely on the badge for centreline alignment. No other damage that I can see.

I found it best to treat the bonnet star as a routine service item - Budget to replace it, on average, once a year

Post Hijack:

RAF Henlow, that's a "Blast from the Past"!:oops:;)

Just an update, there is no CCTV coverage around that area, so we'll never know who did it!

I'm hoping to off load the car anyway at some point before the insurance is up, it's a 2003 so with the missing badge and the scrape on the door a hit and run driver did, I'll probably just scrap the car anyway.

Shocking that it would happen inside an RAF facility!

Came as no surprise to me really, in fact the level of crime at Henlow is very low compared to most other military bases. It's usually either a mix of pissed up 'squaddies' at the weekend, battering the shit out of each other and then their smashing up their barrack blocks, to the unruly kids on the 'domestic' part of the base where there are families clubs, where they'd all get drunk and smash up the toilet blocks, then go stealing bikes or letting car tyres down.

Lesson I learnt a long time ago, if you're going to be off base for a while, do not leave your car there.

In my experience the worst offenders for Illegal Acts within the confines of many RAF Bases are:

The RAF Police! :rolleyes::eek::oops:

This is where we find out that the OP (AntMB) is one of them!;)

Although the Dashcam didn't pick anything up, I do often pick up some spectacular attempts at causing accidents. What software is there that I could use to edit the clips down from the 10 minute 'saved' clips which are on the memory card?

I've never gotten anywhere where I've asked that question.

I know I can do this we the standard video player on my Samsung phone.

Can you do this, or do you mean on a Windows PC?
