Well presented E55......not!

One ropey example of an E55K is worth a lot less than Alps's mint example at the thick end of £10k.

It's been this way for years and will continue to be so.

I will await evidence of the plethora of < £3K E55Ks on the Internet as evidence which I've yet to see.

I have actually seen this car in person - not to buy it but because I bought it's original split rims (well, what was left of them after Norfolk roads....) The owner who sold it on Facebook was fairly honest about it - it is in horrendous exterior condition and is high mileage. It needs a respray at minimum pretty much. I think mechanically and electrically there weren't any terminal issues but I suspect every rubber item needs renewing as well as a good service and clean - the advert lists a fair few items at least. The split rims when purchased were fitted with Landsails with horrendous camber wear which pretty much sums it up.....

You could turn that car around for about £3K i think , its got the hallmarks of a genuine car, just current owner doesn't care!

cheap car for someone who wants to spend the time and effort on it.

Mines just SOLD btw :( Mercedes less again.
But that's one lucky new owner 😎 I would have been all over yours if I hadn't recently bought Simon's.

One key, no logbook, bought it from my brother, bushes gone and pulls to the left, and pictures it dirty ?

He got it cheap from the auction, buyer beware.
As someone said before AMG (All Money Gone)
It's not dirt, it's Man-Wrap™. Gives it another 50hp too. Probably.

Well the new owner currently has the engine out of the car, stripped the engine and sorting out a damaged piston, after trying to sort the crack of the manifold!

He is obviously handy with a set of spanners and the oily bits! Oh and a member on the other side. For those that are interested on what can lurk beneath on a 'bargain' E55!

Humm think i remember mentioning breaking would be a better way of moving it on doh... Mind you id hate to have bought the engine!

Hi all, as the current owner of this E55, I thought I would join this thread so we can follow this one through to hopefully a satisfactory conclusion.

Work done so far:

1. Pistons replaced in both engine banks, land failures with one piston very heavily cracked - was fortunate to have pulled the engine before if failed completely. Overall the internals of the engine appeared to be in pretty good condition.

2. SBC unit fully refurbished by Johnny SBC.

3. Secondary CATS were completely blocked, the CATS were NOT Ceramic! Suspect they were are poor quality aftermarket.

Welcome to the forum.

Good luck with it - seems like you had your work cut out...

Are you doing the work yourself or using a third party?

Depends on the work needed, using specialists including main dealer.

Most of the issues on this car are likely to be common issues:

SBC pump run time, cracked piston ring lands, wear and tear on suspension upper and lower ball joints, Airmatic............

I don't see any major issues in fixing any of these issues, these cars deserve to be in the hands of owners who can maintain them. and not just abuse them.

Working on an unsettle idle with negative pull back on LTFT on bank #2 with support from specialist, once this is sorted i'll move on to sorting out the Airmatic and suspension joint wear.

^ Sounds like the car is in capable hands. Good luck.
The E55 is a tremendous car when taken care of.

Cost for full SBC pump refurb £450.00 including refit and brake bleed by John.
Thanks. What does the refurb entail? Seems good value if it genuinely makes the pump ‘as good as new’

Mine was done by "Johnny SBC" last weekend in London, feel free to contact John directly on 07404487674 and go through the detail.

Alternatively you can call a Bosch service centre.

For a replacement (refurbished) unit from my local dealership I was quoted ~£1300.00. I did shop around and could have picked the same up for ~ £1000-£1100, then you need to get some one with the skills to program it in and bleed the complete brake system in accordance with manufacturer procedure.

John removed SBC unit from the car, refurbished it, reinstalled it and did the system bleed while I sat in the car watching SKYGO!!

Update:

Sorted rough idle and misfiring on Bank 2 and negative LTFT - Turned out to be timing setup was out. The car at idle is now perfect, your can barely notice the engine is running. The response on throttle is amazing! the power and drivability is unbelievable!

Now that engine is sorted, replacing both rear stock air springs with new Arnott today.

Has anyone installed Arnott rear air bags? do you need MB Star system to initiate the airbags after installation?

No need for star, Well i didnt when i fitted Fronts.

Basically Fit the units, Keep the car supported via a Jack or Vehicle Lift, at normal ride height.

Start the car up and let the Bag's fill up then once supporting its own weight still on the jack hit the raise button, the car should lift itself off the jack upwards. All done.

At least thats how i did the fronts on my w211 e55.

Thank you, now working perfect.

I had an open circuit on one of the rear air bag electrical connections.
