Is this engine gunk, or is this actually metal that has corroded? I'll assume it's like this all along both shafts. Is this normal for car with 150,000 miles? or is it because it was poorly taken care of? I have to admit, that I did go for almost 9,000 miles without an oil change the last time around and I've been using non-synthetic Castrol for about 2 years. I recently just switched back to Mobil 1 0w-40, and being more vigilant about car care. Lastly, will this affect performance/fuel mileage?

Thanks in advance for reading :)

looks to me they are just not polished where they don't need to be.

p.s it's hard to tell from picture

I have to agree too.
Have you tried to "scratch" the gunk looking deposits with a fingernail? If nothing comes off, then I assume it is the metal non polished surface. If it does come off, then you have real gunk which probably comes with a poor oil quality

Alright, I'll take another picture tomorrow and see if scratching it will make it come off. I'll report back later :)

Its just the rough cast [ NON MACHINED] finish of the camshaft- nothing to worry about/perfectly normal

Ohhh ok, thanks alot guys!
