Hi guys,
Hope I've got the right forum, I'm trying to buy a new battery but, nearly all of them are 15mm longer than the original in my vehicle. My question is, will the extra length fit in the battery compartment ?

Hi :)
What model of car do you own?

Can't you just measure the battery compartment to find out?

Well give us the measurement of the old battery,,I take it you have a Varta badged mercedes battery.

If VARTA who are OEM for MERC [ and who make many batteries for Bosch ]can't get it right there is little hope for the rest of us ;)

What kind of car model do you own? There are some battery compartments on specific car models that can fit bigger batteries and still operate smoothly as long as the battery has the minimum Cold Cranking Amps. So I suggest you get the one with the right CCA instead. I've encountered the same issue when I was buying from this Mercedes battery shop I found online, and I found out it was okay to purchase a bigger one. But since the battery can't fit the tray, I just simply mounted it in the trunk.

Have you tried reconditioning the old battery with a CTEK or similar ?

Worth borrowing one from a friend - they can work wonders.

Have you tried Tayna . They have a good website. As said some cars have multiple mountings in the battery tray area for different size batteries depending on load demanded by the different engines in the same chassis.

MIKE ! are you trying to give me nightmares !!? Don't you ever do that to me again!

Greta's watching you, Pete.....

You know , it's that thing when someone your Nan knew turned out to be an axe murderer , and your Nan say's " I knew it would happen with him one day...eye's too close together, never trusted him..and his dad was a wrong un' " and nod sagely as she returns to her crochet hooks.....

Varta (Johnson Controls) make batteries for MB to order.

They do not sell the exact same batteries that they make for MB to anyone else.

So the only way to buy a battery that is 100% identical to the original one is by buying an MB-Branded Varta battery.

That said, you can buy a Varta/Bosch battery, as long as it has the same spec, and physically fits in the battery compartment, it will be fine.

I wouldn't worry about the battery being too short, as long as it can be properly secured, and the terminal fit.

In what way are they different appart from appearance/labeling?

They won't have the exact same spec, and sometimes they will also not have the exact physical dimensions.

Also, have a look at an MB battery... it does not carry a Varta P/N that will allow you to order it directly from Varta (in the same way that you could do with say a Bosch or Valeo part).

The MB battery in my car is made by Varta, and rated 80Ah 800A.

The recommended Varta battery for my car has the same dimensions as the MB battery, but is rated 70Ah 760A.

If I look at the Varta batteries that are 80Ah 800A, they are all physically bigger than the original MB battery and won't fit.

I am sure that the recommended Varta battery with 70Ah 760A will be fine for my car, but my point is that you just can't buy a Varta-branded battery that is identical in all aspects to the MB-branded battery.

This may be of interest?

The Ford, VW and Seat people carriers all used to be manufactured from the same factory and production line, are they identical?

Conversely, the old C-Class used to manufactured by Mercedes in Germany and also South Africa, are they identical?

MB batteries maybe manufactured by Varta, but it may (and probably) manufactured to a different spec to the retail batteries. I am not saying that it is higher spec to the retail version, in fact often custom spec may be of a lower spec due to consumer law requiring specific packaging/labelling standards and certification. For example a battery installed inside a mobile phone (that cannot be removed by the user) may require different labelling and certification from similar batteries that are intended to be sold directly to consumers. This is one of many reasons why some companies chose not sell spare parts directly to the public.
