The plate is in my name but the car is in my wifes.
I DO have the retention Certificate.

I want to drive to my nearest office to do it in one hit.
Thanks

They will not do it there and then, it can take 4-20 days.

Glad you replied Malcolm.
I was going to do a 60 mile round trip to get it done tomorrow, you saved me £15 -£20 petrol :-).

I was told today that it CAN be done by going down with ALL the correct paperwok and signatures??

See my thread about the clowns at the DVLA. I have made an official complaint about their inability to process my plate transfer which I attempted to carry out according to their rules, rules they make up as they go along

As Dave K , they will take all the forms, and thats where it stops, taking the forms speeds things up a little,, my last 129 took 9 days to come back and I took the forms in to Exeter DVLA

I was just reading a lot of your posts on the umarked cars ;-).

Will search for your DVLA post NOW.

The basics.

Dear Miss XXXX,

You may recall my earlier email back in March 9 , where having attended Chester DVLA to retain a reg number, I ended up with a replacement MOT with a wrong reg number on it.

Having sorted that out, I ventured back there today to transfer the retained number to my new vehicle. This is where I now ask you to have a close look at the vehicle reg transfer section of the DVLA's website and tell me where it states that, if on producing your V5C/2 and a V62, you will be refused a transfer if the V5 for the vehicle receiving it is already in the post to you. After that, take a look at the back of the Retention of Vehicle Reg Marks Cert.
I quote

' If you have newly acquired the vehicle and you are in possession of the green V5/2 or V5C/2 portion of the registration Document / Certificate, you can use this with your application provided it is accompanied by a V62 application for a Registration Certificate ". Doesn't say " however, if we have already sent out the V5 and it has not arrived yet, you're stuffed because you will have wasted a 40 mile round trip, £3.00 parking and half your working day.

I had ' newly acquired " the vehicle, I had a V5C/2, I had a V62. What I didn't have is ESP to tell me the new V5 was in the post . If you require people not to try and transfer via the V5C/2 and V62 if they are awaiting the arrival of the new V5 ( six weeks according to the DVLA's calculations ) method, then should you not be making that clear both on your forms and on your websites ?

Liked your CLONED remark during your frustrated post.

I was going to go today with just the Green new owner slip, lucky i didnt.

The post came this afternoon with the New V5 certificate, it took 2weeks.

Would it now be possible to do it over the counter (car and retention certificate are in different names I know Malcolm said NO, just getting a 2nd opinion.)
No offence meant, just desperate to get it done.

You need
The retention cert
The new V5 for the car you are putting the plate on
The MOT for that car and the tax disc.
If the retention cert is not in your name, I think you need it counter signing by the person whose name is on it

They will not do it there and then, it can take 4-20 days.

At my local DVLA Office they will, and did.

Why doesn't someone 'phone their local DVLA office and ask? surely that would make sense.

I would add that I got a jobsworth who spent hours telling me that I had to go straight outside and change the plates over as the car would disintegrate into a pile of dust if driven home on the old plates - she didn't tell me not to put the old plates on another car, so I did.

I've had it done over the counter before. Take all the forms with you (Wimbledon is where I went). they checked all the forms, looked up the old reg on the donor car, stamped it all, told me the reg of donor car and away I went. Had new plates made up, placed on car. Documents came back to me within 1 week.

I think it depends on the range of services offered by the office. I've been lucky, done it twice (two different local offices), no problems, just handed over the docs and Robert's your uncle's brother!

Phone the local DVLA office?

I have been trying to get DVLA Chelmsford number for ages. Think it will be easier to get Osama Bin Ladens:o

We have been down this road before and it seems that some will and some will not,,we had a very long thread on it

Thus we may state that "some offices may do it" rather than "They will not do it there and then, it can take 4-20 days."

Re phone numbers:-

Sorry, it lost the formatting.
